p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Sun Shines Through

As the sun was setting at Turret Arch in Arches National Park a few weeks ago, I wondered if I could get the sun to shine through the opening in it? Where I needed to set up the shot, the opening in the arch takes on a keyhole type look. After taking a couple of shots, I moved my position slightly to get the shine to shine through the small window on it also. I am pretty sure that small window has a name, but it escapes me at the moment.

While I like the more unique look of the arch turned keyhole, I think my moving slightly for the sun though the window caused the clouds to perhaps better frame Turret Arch.

All thoughts and comments welcome.

Jim

Damn nice! Was it the night before we met up? Both are sweeeeeeet! in #2, the snow has a slight magenta cast to it.

Really nice Jim. Very dynamic and everything works together. Awesome color.

Those are both sweet. I like the second one because the window itself is obscured or not evident; it look like the sun is shining through rocks, which adds to the interest and intrigue. I see a magenta cast to the entire second image, not just the snow, but I like it; I prefer the sky color over the first one.

Thanks! This was the same night we were shooting there. Remember when you were shooting the sun setting to the right of it across the snow patch with your son? That's when I ran up the trail to get these.

As for that slight magenta cast, when I tried correcting for it, then it shifted too much to a green tint, I couldn't find a happy medium. So for now I left it like this as I need to get back to work on that wedding I shot recently.

Both are great, but the second is my favorite. Nice catch, these alignments can be tough because the sun sits at an angle and pretty fast.

Nice photos Jim. I really like the second one. Great Work!

Just curious, what makes the double flare on the sun? The Lens? Filter? Something else? I took a shot at Mesa Arch and have the single flair, but not sure I really noticed the double before.

Nice shots Jim. I prefer #2 as I like seeing the window a bit more and the sun star is more symmetrical. I find the sun star a bit too much and takes away from the scene a bit. If there was a way to tone it down in post, I'd like to see that version.

Jim,

Really impressive shots with new expressions for the Turret Arch. Second one is my favorite. Fairly big contrast with color spectrum.

The second has the nice effect of highlighting how the stairs lead to the arch. Excellent shot!

Nice creativity there. I think the 2nd works better due to the combination of the cloud/rock composition and the lower intensity of the sunstar.

Man, Jim, this is a really dynamic duo! I'm with everyone else so far. I love both, but think No. 2 is stronger. The sunstar is more detailed, the keyhole is shown off better IMHO, the clouds are nicer and the splash of light in the background more intense. Just fantastic.

Jim,

Both are good captures. I wonder if it was possible to shoot a little wider to create a more desolate context and thus an alien world feel.

Thanks Brad, I am glad you liked the shots. As for the flaring, that's a good question, I will have to pay more attention to what I was shooting when I see that again, but I will say this is not the first time I have seen the flaring go like that. This was shot with the D800E and the 14-24mm.

Hey Glenn,

Thanks, I do like #2 better myself, but I do think the sun shining through the keyhole in #1 is different and kind a cool, so that's why I posted both. Plus, I was pretty sure if I had just posted the one, that someone would ask if I had shot it with the sun shining through the other hole anyway....
