A little alliteration there.

Hey Mark,

Now that is a wide array of color you got. That's a sweet view, though I wonder if there isn't too much of a cyan cast in the clouds on the right half?

Jim, white balancing this one was tough as it went from too warm on the left to too cool on the right. I'll run a gradientand try to balance that way.

Edit. Left the original up but neutralized the cyan in the sky and shadows quite a bit.

Hey Mark,

The edit does look better. That would be a tough range of light to process for sure.

Hey Don,

Does someone officially call this area the Yosemite of the East? The view in Marks shot is nice, but it doesn't hold a candle to Yosemite... at least not in my biased view...

I remember for years not being able to visit Zion when I was there and saw they wrote the Zion canyon area and described it as "Little Yosemite Valley".... I was astonished that anyone would be so bold and to me so dumb as to call it that... Zion seemed like an interesting area, but in terms of sheer drama, to call that canyon area "Little Yosemite Valley" just turned me off... Nothing in there stood up to Half Dome... or El Capitan... or Yosemite Falls... the Giant Staircase.... I thought, who were these guys in Zion trying to kid?? And still to this day, though I like certain parts of Zion, I still would never ever ever say it was a little Yosemite Valley...

Well.... that's my biased bent on people degrading the grandeur of Yosemite by trying to someone state that anywhere else is an equal to it... in my eyes... and I admit it's my eyes... there is no place on this earth that compares to Yosemite, and especially Yosemite Valley and the amount of pure awesome grandeur that is packed in that small valley... inch per inch, no place on this earth packs so much into so little space...

Easy Jim. Down boy! It's referred to as the Yosemite of the East primarily by geologists, because it probably looked a lot like Yosemite a few million years ago.

I can hear Panthertown talking to Yosemite, "Just you wait you young whippersnaper, your domes will erode, your Valley floor will fill with sediment, your grandeur will fade, and some young upstart being formed just now, somewhere out in the Pacific will become the next big thing. You just mark my words."

Or in other words

It's nice to get old gracefully, you just don't get all the attention.

Additionally, you have to realize that River Rover's image is a pano. Things tend to look a little different when stretched out. Check out the website for more images:

There are some impressive rock domes and cliffs throughout this section of western NC. Whiteside Mountain just to the southwest offers some of the highest cliffs in the eastern U.S. (750').

Nice image from Salt Rock Rover!

Thanks Craig! It's actually from Black Rock Mountain Overlook trail. Did pretty much an open bivy up there since there wasn't any place to set up a tent on level ground and I didn't want to risk beating up the moss and lichen that grow on the rocks.
