When camping at Abraham Lake I had an idea of the photo where I would combine foreground ice with the starry sky. For two days the weather was bringing nothing but clouds, snow and darkness. The last night I woke up in the middle of the night to the calm and quiet weather. For the first time I was able to see some stars above the lake. Fast moving clouds opened for few minutes and I was able to capture this amazing show of lights. The glow in the sky comes from distant city and moon hidden behind the clouds.
Foreground shots were taken at dusk for better details in the ice.
Mountain and sky come from one 30 seconds shot
Wow, that's really nice. Great color transition in the sky and the clouds really lead the eye in. I've got to ask... Do you leave your camera sitting out in the cold and wind all night after taking your dusk foreground shot and then waiting for the sky to cooperate?
Thanks Phil. No I wouldn't leave my camera in these conditions. It was snowing and wind was just crazy. But I left my tripod there secured for few hours. I wasn't too worried about small misalignment of photos because I knew I was going to do blend anyway. If you would like more details about this technique I will be glad to help.

Thanks Artur I consistently enjoy seeing your images and would certainly like more details on your blend technique. If it matters I've used CS4 for a while and just started using CS6. Please PM me unless you prefer to share here.
Very cool looking shot. It's nice how the stars are peaking through, and I know we can't control the weather, but I do wish there were a few more stars and a little less clouds.
I really like this one. I like the tones in the foreground, overall composition and the scene in general. The shape of the cloud is awesome! My only criticism is that the stars look a bit chunky and the sky could be maybe 1/2 stop darker. The horizon looks very slightly sideways, but it might be my crooked eyeballs.
I like the composition and the foreground details are great. I like the pattern of the clouds, I just wish the clouds thinned out a bit more but you can't control nature :P
