Scott,
I never pass by a chance to check out your posts - almost always inspiring, and often you include enough backstory on your shoot that I can learn some good info on a location or a technique as well
So let's see, here is my comments:
All these are good really, and I can only really find much to critique in comparison with each other as if I saw any of them alone I would be loving it. The one general comment I would make is that while I love the water treatment in all of these, I wonder if you shot any faster shutter speeds to freeze any of the dramatic waves asIi think that could have also provided some arresting images. Just a thought. So relatively speaking:
1) This is a great shot, and I actually enjoy the more subtle tones of the sky here than the shot in #2. A very minor nitpick for me would be that with the rocks, waves, and the clouds all being biased to the right side it feels just a little bit unbalanced to that side, but really a minor nit.
2) I am tempted to say the saturation of this one is too high; except that I have also shot the ocean in Mexico and it really can be an unreal blue color, so I have to assume both the water and sky are reasonably accurate. But for some reason I cannot then explain, #2 just doesn't quite hit me to the same level as the other shots - perhaps it is the absence of clouds? Sorry, not a very helpful comment I know...
3) This is a great capture! Color is great, very crisp focus (like you always do), and I like the diagonal balance of the rocks in the lower right with the heavier dramatic skies to the upper left - nicely done there.
4) Ok, I THINK this is my favorite of the 4 (but it is a close contest with #3.) The sky color is wonderful, but it doesn't overpower the rest of the scene, and the water drama is great too. This IS one of the shots where I would have loved to have seen a faster shutter speed, especially if you could still have captured some wave spray like you did here, just for comparison. Colors are phenomenal here though and somehow they just work for me here.
So I guess my ratings are 4,3,1,2 (but as stated originally, I'd love to have captured any of the 4!)
I have been meaning to ask you too how you like the 7D for landscape, as opposed to a full frame body? The resolution would seem to be close enough to the highest Canon bodies to not really matter and the extra DOF for a given aperture over a full frame sensor would only be a benefit for most classic style landscape shots. I guess the noise tradeoff would be the only concern? I shoot these days with a 5D Mk II, but still find that a lot of my older work shot with the 40D still holds up reasonably well by comparison.
Thanks for sharing another great set!
