While on vacation in Mexico I spent a lot of time on the shores by our resort at sunset time. Here are a few of my favourites. I was lucky to get some nice light and skies.

Hope you enjoy!

Scott,

I never pass by a chance to check out your posts - almost always inspiring, and often you include enough backstory on your shoot that I can learn some good info on a location or a technique as well

So let's see, here is my comments:

All these are good really, and I can only really find much to critique in comparison with each other as if I saw any of them alone I would be loving it. The one general comment I would make is that while I love the water treatment in all of these, I wonder if you shot any faster shutter speeds to freeze any of the dramatic waves asIi think that could have also provided some arresting images. Just a thought. So relatively speaking:

1) This is a great shot, and I actually enjoy the more subtle tones of the sky here than the shot in #2. A very minor nitpick for me would be that with the rocks, waves, and the clouds all being biased to the right side it feels just a little bit unbalanced to that side, but really a minor nit.

2) I am tempted to say the saturation of this one is too high; except that I have also shot the ocean in Mexico and it really can be an unreal blue color, so I have to assume both the water and sky are reasonably accurate. But for some reason I cannot then explain, #2 just doesn't quite hit me to the same level as the other shots - perhaps it is the absence of clouds? Sorry, not a very helpful comment I know...

3) This is a great capture! Color is great, very crisp focus (like you always do), and I like the diagonal balance of the rocks in the lower right with the heavier dramatic skies to the upper left - nicely done there.

4) Ok, I THINK this is my favorite of the 4 (but it is a close contest with #3.) The sky color is wonderful, but it doesn't overpower the rest of the scene, and the water drama is great too. This IS one of the shots where I would have loved to have seen a faster shutter speed, especially if you could still have captured some wave spray like you did here, just for comparison. Colors are phenomenal here though and somehow they just work for me here.

So I guess my ratings are 4,3,1,2 (but as stated originally, I'd love to have captured any of the 4!)

I have been meaning to ask you too how you like the 7D for landscape, as opposed to a full frame body? The resolution would seem to be close enough to the highest Canon bodies to not really matter and the extra DOF for a given aperture over a full frame sensor would only be a benefit for most classic style landscape shots. I guess the noise tradeoff would be the only concern? I shoot these days with a 5D Mk II, but still find that a lot of my older work shot with the 40D still holds up reasonably well by comparison.

Thanks for sharing another great set!

ML

Scott,

Fabulous shots! I'd have to say #2 is my favorite, not only because of the colors, but the composition just seems to keep my eye moving into and around the frame. But, as ML says, I'd like to have shot all of them myself!

Great work again Scott, but us humans always have to pick a favourite when offered up a bunch, so I'll give in to that silly compulsion and choose #3. I try to picture things in black & white to see the bare basics. The arrangement of the clouds adds to the depth while balancing the foreground--or maybe I like it just because. Sometimes we over-think things.

Just wondering about photo #2. What is on the coral near the bottom left? The sky is like a rainbow in that one. Very nice.

Hey Scott,

Cool shots here. #2 and 5 are my favorites. There is nothing like hanging around the motion of the ocean!

Thank you Mike! The set up for these were all the same. Tripod+camera+filters. All single exposures. I often used a .6 and .9 GND and a .9 ND filter to get longer shutters speeds.

So let's see, here is my comments:

For me I like all the motion in throughout this image. May not appeal to all but that is OK ...also the colour is very close to how I recall it. I was amazed how much light and colours change when shooting the ocean shores.

Thanks again.

I have many shore shots from this trip. Some with faster shutter speeds but I just like the slighter loinger shutter speeds. My goal this trip was to capture the motion. Cant wait to go back next year and seem we'll be making a strong effort to do so.

So I guess my ratings are 4,3,1,2 (but as stated originally, I'd love to have captured any of the 4!)

...Show moreSo far I like it but I really want to shoot FF. Just not in the budget....yet. I plan to get the Nikon D800E and some Zeiss glass. I will keep my Canon stuff and get an adapter to use my Nikon lenses on the Canons. I want to convert my 7D to a dedicated IR camera.

I like a lot of the features on the 7D. It is virtually identical to the 40D just more features and upgrades. Size-wise they seem identical which was nice as I didnt have to buy another RRS L bracket for my tripod setup. $140 saved!

Thank you Sandra.

The white and red "rock" is coral. The shores literally have millions of "rocks" of coral. Great to picking up a couple of keepsakes for the shelf at home.

Thank you Jim. I agree. That is why I want to shoot the Oregon coast so badly. A dream of mine!

400 miles of magnificent, accessible coast awaits you here.
C'mon down, ya'll. (Well, we're south of MOST of Canada .)
Another wonderful set, Scott.
From your subarctic frozen lakes to the warmth of the Caribbean Sea, you seem to have figured out how to do coastlines .

Thank you Charlie! If I had the funds I would be down there for at least month!!! One day it will happen! As for shooting the "big" shores I have a LOT to learn! Just with I didn't live so far away from them. Everything is frozen solid here. :S

More nice shots Scott...I would expect you to spend a lot of time by the shore. I particularly like #3, the way the water is leaping out at you intensity of the clouds.

Thank you Sunny.

I am NOT thrilled to be back. I haven't even shot a single image since Mexico. Almost 3 weeks now. Just GARBAGE weather. On the bright side, I am planning a day out with a photographer friend Friday. Hopefully I can break my camera's silence.

Thank you Scott. Ironically, when my GF was researching places to stay, the shores of this resort were one of the biggest selling features for me!

Haha, your camera must be showing some attitude since you brought it back to the sub-arctic. Lets hope this snowfall warning doesn't amount to much, but we're not that lucky. I had my camera out on Lake Winnipeg last week and it wasn't too happy either. One of my lenses rebelled. It refused to work--and it's a manual lens.

Did you happen to get any close-up photos of the coral?

these are really cool. I saw someone do this before too but with a longer exposure and it came out like it was really smokey...I liked that too. Hoping to try this out when I go to the Oregon Coast this summer.
