G'day mate.

These look like it's more about the ring than him...To him maybe it's important.
1 would have been cool if his face was in focus.
2 cool idea.
3 Should be deleted.
4 Nice shot
5 Again the ring. His hands don't look good and to me is giving them a feminine feel. I would have liked them lower and towards his knees.
6 Is an ok shot.

to people who are used to dealing with guns, looking down the barrel of a gun like that makes me nauseous. the rest are nice.

I am a hobby firearms enthusiast. I enjoy target shooting for defense and possibly a 3 gun competition this year. I am comfortable around firearms and I am not put off by firearm ownership.

With that said, I never want to look down the barrel of a firearm. It is in bad taste in my opinion. Perhaps some families would be okay with their child in the "down the barrel" photo, but as a father I wouldn't want to see that from my son.

A firearm is only meant to be pointed at something that is to be destroyed. I don't feel that should be conveyed in a high school senior portrait. If I'm to connect with the subject and all I see is the barrel of the weapon, am I connecting with the subject or with the firearm?

Well, I had no idea that I was before the ethics board. I'll share a little history on the "down the barrel shot". The young man is an avid duck hunter and the entire shoot pretty much encompassed that theme, except for a few standard shots for mom. The breech was blocked open and my camera was operated via remote. And how do you miss the connection to the subject while the ring is so prominent in the photo? To me, it is an artistic expression saying "I'm a graduating senior that loves to hunt."

Ahh well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and interpretations. The young man and his family were extremely pleased with it. I think the next one I do, I will light and extinguish a small piece of paper down the barrel to get the smoke effect.

It doesn't bother me....I get the issue, but it is about what makes the customer happy and as long as everyone is safe it is ok with me. Hey it's their money, they can spend it any way they want.

I understand the senior and the ring thing, maybe it's a USA or northern Ohio. When I got my ring at college that was a huge deal to me, a huge deal. So I understand the senior and his ring. It is a symbol of accomplishment that seniors before him wore, that is the big deal. Tradition!
