Bob,
Yes, there was a person under there. But since he or she is covered by the blanket, I stated that fact in my caption. Would it have made a better picture if part of the person were sticking out? Of course. But my idea of candid documentary photography doesn't include such things as asking a homeless person to stick out a leg because it will make a better photo.
Like most documentary photographs- what you see is what you get- with the occasional help from captions (which I included).
Mark,
What there is to "get," I don't know; that's an individual matter.
For you there is apparently nothing to get. Fair enough.
But here are a couple of things that I get from this photograph:
A person huddled under a blanket- probably asleep.
In a doorway of a poorly-maintained building.
In the downtown part of a very fine city.
An open wine bottle.
No place for people to donate money- and located in a part of the city with very little foot traffic- which helps me think that it's not a set-up and therefore the person is probably homeless.
But- as with all beggars and homeless, I don't know the real story.
I just took a shot of it and posted it here because it's a part of the life of a city that most of us make a point of never looking closely at. And that's okay, too.
There are agencies that provide food and shelter for the homeless if they need it (especially in cold weather). But even those very good samaritans know that they can't force the homeless to use the help.
