Definitely not the most photogenic, but when you can't find anything else to photograph...

Please feel free to share any and all suggestions/criticisms

Thanks!

1. Extra tight comp for impact

2. Catching first light

3. Portrait

4. Coming in for landing

5. Mating

A special set Mitesh! Each of those is a "beauty", photographically speaking or course. #3 is my fave, but 1 is not far behind.

Terrific detail in 1 and 3 Mitesh... I personally prefer the wider view of #3... well done.
#2 is the standout for me in this set... beautiful light/color and good choice of composition.
Looks like he came in really close to you in #4... unfortunate the wings got clipped.
Nice behavioral shot of these big birds in #5, looks like it was midday tough light... I would like to see a bit more room all around in this image.
Nice work.

Appreciate the detailed feedback on each image, Kirk! Your observations about 4 and 5 are spot on, of course, and I agree with your suggestion that 5 could benefit from some space. Unfortunately, I didn't think about that when composing in camera, and now I'm stuck with it

Mitesh, the second is wonderfully warm and a super photo. Arriving before sunrise at the Anhinga Trail I was saw at least 20 of these guys on the ground...they seemed totally nonplussed by me and came within inches...I thought that cute till I realized that they eat rotting stuff...yuch!

Thanks, Eric! I still can't believe that we managed to miss each other since we were both there at pretty much the same time!

Nice work on these, Mitesh. My wife and I have been having an ongoing debate about clipped wings. I've been paying more attention to bird paintings- clipped wings often work.

Thanks for the comment, Vic. Normally, I would be upset about clipping wings. In this case, I felt like the shape of the wing actually followed the edge of the frame, so if the viewer was sufficiently drawn to the face/eye, then subconsciously, the brain would assume it saw the entire wing. Maybe I'm overthinking it... although my wife thinks I don't think enough...

Excellent. 2 & 3 for me. Impressive how you get them so sharp and clean even at high ISO.

Very nice Mitesh. My only comment is that 1 is a little tight on the "beak side" of the shot ~ Ron

Thanks, Bruno! I think the high ISO hurts IQ when images have to be cropped heavily. If you're able to use all the pixels, most modern cameras can easily do ISO 3200 with little to no NR.

Appreciate the comment, Ron- and yes, it is tight on the "beak side" . In this case, intentionally done so as I wanted the textures and, well, how do I say it gently... the "ugliness"- to pop out of the screen and give the viewer nothing else to look at.
