"Celestial Bend" (NOT Horseshoe Bend)

An original location about 500-700 feet down in what I call the "crack" on one of the goose neck bends on the Glen Canyon. A very favorite and special place of mine to solo camp. I set my alarm to get up to do some night shots and was greeted with just enough moon light from behind/right to not have to do an outrageously high ISO capture. The bright light in the scene is not the moon, it is Venus. Also if you look very carefully, the moon is reflected in the clouds on the right!

This was shot with:

Canon 5D Mark 2
Canon 14mm L2
f/2.8
30 seconds
1600 ISO.

In camera noise reduction (dark frame) was used. It is a single raw file, double processed for noise reduction. One with no Luminance noise reduction and just a little capture (deconvolution) sharpening (30pts) for the land. The other with no capture sharpening and an appropriate amount of Luminance noise reduction for both the sky and water.

More details on my FB page.

As always most accurately viewed on a calibrated monitor on Safari, Firefox or Chrome.

Nice shot Mark. Great job with the exposure. Only nitpick I have is that Venus is screwing with my eyes. It's just a touch distracting and I think it's due to the reflection on the water. Though, the more I stare at this the less is bothers me.

I forgot to mention there is actually a reflection of the moon in the clouds if you take real care to find it. It is on the right side of the frame.

Thank you very much J for the compliment and feedback. I agree that some will find it distracting. I think cloned out would work too. Though it mesmerizes me.

Just put the second version with it cloned out for those who may not like Venus.

Wouldn't have thought I'd be saying this but I prefer the one with Venus cloned out. Either way, spectacular capture and pp'ing.

Love the landscape, not so much the sky. Just feels blurry to me, gives me a headache looking at it...but the landscape is wonderfully exposed full of detail.

I love this one. I do this sort of shot myself with far less success, not to mention that great location.

Agree with Ben: Fantastic location. What a fantastic place to camp!

I also prefer #2 w/o Venus reflection. Wonderful clarity on the rocks, perhaps a touch bright.

Thanks for sharing.

Normally I like celestial reflections, but I do like the one with it cloned out.

Also - what an amazing shot! Just awesome work!

Another one for the photo without the reflection. Great location, shot, and PP.

I dunno, I like the one with Venus and the reflection. Just more interesting things to see. I can see why people like it without.

Great photo Mark!

What a beautiful, moody photo; made all the moodier by venus. I like the first one best.

Hey Mark,

Pretty cools shot here, it's always nice when the moon can give a helping hand to light the scene up. #2 without venus is my choice. I think with Venus in it, the left side of the shot is just too heavy.

take me there

I like them both but happy with the venus one. I can see how the sky spaces you out, with the cloud blur. Great work as per usual

Thank you very much Matt. Just to reiterate this is not Horseshoe Bend. Although very similar, this is one of the 3 other major good-neck "bends" in the Glen Canyon area.

Hi Mark,

This is a wonderful shot. I like the clouds showing movement beneath the stars.

As far as Venus goes, I like it with it because it's supposed to be there. What I do with the moon when it's on the edge of the frame making it egg-shaped, is to push it back to round. This looks like a case for that tool on Venus and it's reflection.
