p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sabino Canyon Day #3

My vacation is winding down, but I decided to focus on Sabino Canyon this past week and made several trips out there. For one, the canyon is beautiful, but for another, we've had nothing but blue skies for weeks. No interesting clouds or light at all, and a canyon is great for days with a boring sky, not to mention that this time of year, the setting sun shoots right down the canyon making for some dramatic light inside the canyon. You can see some shots from the first day of shooting here and shots from day two here. What follows are some shots from day three.

As always, CC are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sabino Canyon is difficult to shoot. I spend plenty of time there only to come to the realization that it's not photogenic. There's a lot of "stuff" to control in the image. I like #2 and #3. Both have good composition. It's too bad the contrail cut straight across #3 though. I think the composition of #2 is really strong. I would like to see a color treatment of that one.

Next time you're anticipating clouds and a good sunset, do the hike up Blackett's Ridge. The view is worth it.

I like #2, though it makes no difference to the viewer what day you made them.

Another good sunset hike, much easier than Blackett's, is from the Broadway trailhead to Pink Hill. It's only about 1.5 miles each way, and is nearly flat. With minor repositioning to avoid the odd Ocotillo branch, you get a fantastic 360 degree view of the Valley and Catalina, Rincon, and distant Tucson Mountains.

I've often found it difficult to shoot as well. That's one of the reasons I decided to focus on it, to see what I could make of it. The business you describe is definitely there, that's probably why I typically spend my time in there with longer lenses so I can isolate shots, although for the past few days I primarily (with the exception of most of the shots from day 3) I tried to restrict myself to 24mm. As for the contrail, that's an easy enough fix. In fact I had meant to remove it and for some reason changed my mind. I'll definitely get around to doing that at some point.

Thanks,

Dave

I've never tried Blackett's ridge. I do plan on it at some point though. I'll have to check out the Broadway trail as well. Thanks for the recommendations.

By the time the sun comes up over the hills its harsh and lost all its glow. Still, its a lovely place to be especially early in the morning and its nice be next to all that water in the desert. You have focused on some nice elements of the park.

Yeah, mid-day, you have to look for details, but this time of year, at sunset, the sun shines straight (more or less) down the canyon and you can get some really great light.

I find you stating the above strange at best. This is your opinion and really, as I see it, rude and offensive.

The photographer is providing back ground, a story. I'm a 'viewer' and it's all good for me.

I said I like one of the images. Rude and offensive? Uh oh, another super sensitive easily offended type that can't understand that some people enjoy photography differently than themselves. Sure, I should not have used the word 'viewer', but I meant many viewers, not you. Yeah, long stories are nice, but a good image tells it's own, and doesn't care what day it was made relative to when the photographer got in his car. Nothing strange about it. If a comment I made to another person (not even yourself) bothers you that much, please PM me and keep this thread on track.
