I was out on the beach with fellow FMers Nick, his friend Fred, and Glenn searching for the snowy owls on December 30 and they decided to take a trip that day. That is a shame as Nick and Fred had made a 5 hour drive from PA to see these stunning birds. Sightings indicate that they had traveled about 5 miles east and have returned so we will have snowy owls in a blizzard tomorrow. While out looking for the snowy owls we found a section of beached covered with sandpipers and I figured they were sanderlings as there are so many of them on Long Island. When I started to process my photo I realized I had something else and had to check my National Geographic Complete Birds of North America to identify these birds. Here they are from establishment photo through close up and blastoff.

1: D200 + 80-400 VR @ 400mm, ISO 400, 1/250, f8, fill flash (SB910 + XT flash extender)
2-11: 1: D200 + 80-400 VR + 1.4x TC @ 560mm, ISO 400, 1/200, f8, fill flash (SB910 + XT flash extender)
Note that I have my flash dialed way back so that the soft light was the key light and I put just a touch of flash in the shadows and also created catch light in the eyes.
Comments and suggestions welcome,
