p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Life and near death in S.W.Florida

To my wife for finding this amazing little cottage on the Sanibel river .In the front yard we had a osprey nest high up in a norfolk pine but this post is from the rear of the house right on the river.I was chillin on the back deck when i heard the tri-colored heron scream,i looked up grabbed my gear and rushed out to see this. These events went on for over an hour and i do believe i saved this bird by just being there as the hawk saw me and let go,flew up to a mangrove branch above the heron and watched it sit on the water .I rushed out of the house so fast i did not grab my tripod so these are all hand held.Thank you to all who view and comment. And a very Healthy Happy and safe New Year

Broad tailed hawk has the tri colored by the belly

Lucky to escape

Half an hour from the first shot

45 min. after the first shot

1 hour and it finally wades into the saftey of the mangroves

That's pretty cool. But the participants are an immature Cooper's Hawk and a Green Heron.

How did he get away?

The little guy sure looks like he's havin' a bad hair day in photo 2!

Did the hawk try to get him again?

Interesting images but I the only one that has some reservations about the photographer being a participant rather just an observer in this event?

Well Bill that is an age old question of the photographer. If you read my opening text I stated that i believe i saved that bird by just being there. This is nature this is what happens every day in nature just because i caught it on camera does not make me a participant.Look inside yourself and try and figure out what you may have done .I consider myself a very lucky man just to witness this, would it have made me feel bad if the bird died?Yes very bad but then i go back to nature and the survival of the strongest.I thank you for your comment and hope to see more from you
Mike

This all took place a mear 40 feet away from me so as i stalked up to the bank of the river the hawk let the heron go.That hawk hung around for about an hour in a tree about 100 feet away but then flew off as the heron made its way into the mangroves
