My son and I went out to shoot snowies yesterday, but what we encountered was not ideal. This guy was hung up in a barb wire fence by the wing. It looked like he had been there a while, becuz he was quite still. It took us probably 10 minutes to get the wing free from the barbs. We called Natural Resources, an officer came and took the bird. However, he said if it doesnt recover on its own ( ie the wings broken) they will put it down. Its not an endangered species.
With the invasion of the owls in southern climates its likely a story that is to be repeated over the winter.

Theres more info including video on my FB page if interested. If you can't access it let me know.
I'll be calling DNR tomorrow to get an update on the bird.

Paul

The hopeless hang up. It looked as if he had been picking away at the snagged area trying to free himself.

The rescued bird awaiting transport. He was surprisingly calm as I sat with him for 40 minutes. But those eyes seemed to look right into my soul.

This is the same bird shot the previuos day by myself

Thanks for sharing the story Paul. Too bad about the owl hitting the fence. Lots of man-made and imposed obstacles out there for flying critters to avoid.

Glad you were there to find it and give it a chance. Sad to see such a beautiful creature in that state.

Thank you Paul for helping the owl. Great to see such compassion and caring.
If the owl cant recover on his own is there a wildlife center nearby where he could live out his life, perhaps become an " educational " owl for school children and groups to see/learn about snowy owls ?

Good news!
I am told by our local news reporter that the biologist at the widlife station has examined the bird and his wing is not broken. He will be transported to a rehab wildlife centre and hopefully released from there in the future.

Give it directions to Connecticut USA if it fully recovers. Nice story with a happy ending.

Glad to hear he's got a chance and despite the content I'm glad you posted this. A couple of years ago I saw something hanging from a barbed wire fence. When I went to investigate and got closer, I saw that it was a bird wing. At first I figured it was maybe placed there buy a shrike of some sort or maybe some kid found a dead bird's wing and stuck it on the fence. When I got to the fence however, I found a dead Long Eared owl laying on the ground. The wing had been torn from the body at the shoulder socket. I suspected he may have flown into it, got stuck, and lost his wing in his struggles to get free but never knew for sure. I think this answers the question. A terrible way to go for sure and to this date the only LE owl I've seen.
