I asked him not to "smile for the camera" and this is what I got. He seems ill at ease, which does not reflect our conversation at all. I bumped into Jay a couple of weeks later. He was cordial, but a bit standoffish, which surprised me.

Bob- that matches pretty much what I was thinking after I stopped chuckling about the long hair growing from the lower back of his head. Better than a comb-over, I guess .
Was there a particular reason why you asked him to not smile (as opposed to not mentioning it at all)?
