Two images taken on Wednesday night before a small storm came ashore on Thursday in San Diego. Thought the color might be better, but still thought they turned out OK. Hope you enjoy.

Nice shots. I would suggest cropping the second one to just include the light line at the horizon.

Helenica-
Thanks for the reply and the suggestion. I will play with the cropping and see how that looks. Thanks again.

Weren't the clouds amazing earlier in the week? I kept on kicking myself for scheduling practices early and having to leave work late. At least it made the trip from Scripps Ranch to La Mesa enjoyable!

Hey Ron,

2 very nice shots here, #2 is my favorite, I really like the foreground in it.

I do have 1 suggestion and 1 question. In both shots, the horizon is bent, that's the WA distortion from the lens. You should go into the Lens Correction tool in photoshop and straighten the horizon out. My question is what was your reasoning behind the f stops you used in both shots? With the 24-120mm I would suggest not going above f13 unless there was some aspect of the shot that really required it. The reason is that above f13 the diffraction will be quite noticeable.

Jim-
Thanks for the suggestions.

You mention f/13 for the 24-120. Where do you think diffraction becomes noticeable with the 16-35?

Hey Ron,

For the 16-35mm f13 was also my max. F13 with shooting wide gives a very good range of DOF, so with my lenses f13 is where I always start off with on them, and only change it if the situation determines differently. Even with my new 14-24mm which I have not had a chance to do any formal tests on, but with some quick sample shots it appears to not be affected by diffraction that I could see until atleast after f16. But I still have f13 as my normal setting.

Jim-
Thanks for the reply and the information.

Is it safe to say that the only way to determine the diffraction of a lens and camera combination is to take a series of images at all apertures and then closely examine them to determine at which aperture the image begins to look "soft" at the focus point? I am unaware of any published data on lens/camera combination that may indicate the diffraction point so I assume it must be done on a subjective basis like I described? Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks again
Ron

Very nice images. I like No. 1 better. Like Jim mentioned, I think diffraction becomes noticeable between f/11 and f/16 on the D800, using almost any lens... so f/13 is a good middle ground to remember.

Thanks Maji-

After reading more about diffraction it seems that doing evaluation of images is about the only way to know for sure. I appreciate your opinion of diffraction on the 800.

Thanks again.
