At a shrine in Tokyo with my group of American tourists (I was showing them a bit of Japan and China).
Gesturing to the school girls, they smiled and "assumed the position" to let me take their photograph.
I included a few of the women from my group- with the shrine in the background.

Oh, yes; the Japanese have long been an obedient people- which is one reason why "Made in Japan" usually means well made.
In this case, however, the girls were not being obedient to me because all I asked was permission to take their photograph. They immediately lined up this way because they had always been told to line up that way.
As you know, Bob- I almost never tell people to stand a certain way, or pose at all. And never have I asked anyone to smile .
