Dave,

For the first shot, let me play devil's advocate here and ask: why not a square crop that cuts out the truck? What is the truck adding to the shot? Daniel would kill me for suggesting cutting context. I'm not saying it definitely "needs" to be done, but I'm curious whether you feel it adds anything.

I enjoy the composition and action of the second shot.

True, the truck doesn't add...but that space does provide balance. The girl is so far over to the right of the frame. A square crop would put the boy on the left of the frame, which would make for a weird picture IMHO. FWIW

Evan and Bryan,
Thanks for your takes on the crop of the first; definitely appreciate the disconfirming information. I actually went back and forth on this, but for slightly different reasons. I like the context that the truck provides, the general toy entropy that you fight everyday with kids in the house. I also like how it seems to watching the action as well. I don't necessarily like the way that it weights the left side of the frame and complicates the balance, something a square crop would clean up. Maybe I need to think about it some more.
