I'm sure Bend is a very nice area, but it will probably have to wait for another time.

Last week of May or First week of Sept? I would definitely pick end of May this year. It has been a very dry winter with an extremely low snowpack. By Sept. there will likely be a lot of smoke in the air from forest fires, it happens every year. In late May you will catch the Rhododendrons blooming in the Redwoods and the Lupin blooming along the S. Oregon Coast. Crater lake is a long drive to reach and doing the drive around the rim in midday light didn't offer much different that the view from the West side of the rim. On the drive back to Portland check the weather, there is more sun on hwy 97 and more greens on I-5 about the same travel time either way. Hwy 97 is a nice contrast to the rest of the trip.

wow, only spending 20 minutes in the Gorge is selling yourself short. You will be hard pressed to find more world class waterfalls condensed in such a small area as the Gorge. I would spend 2 days here, imo. I would spend more time in the Gorge than at Crater Lake.

Also, I would try to visit in late May or early June, rather than in September.

That is a LOT of driving and a LOT of ground to cover in such a short period of time. I'm afraid it won't give you enough time to shoot, especially if you wind up being in the locations by late morning/early afternoon.

I spent just over two weeks in Oregon last September and like Dustin mentioned, many of the classic falls were realtively dry as compared to the spring. The drive down the coast from Cannon Beach to Bandon is a long haul as is the HIKE over to Crater Lake and then back to Portland. Sounds very aggressive in a short period of time. Personally, with only a week to ten days, I would concentrate on the Gorge for a couple of days and then down the coast. Unless you are at Crater Lake for either sunrise or sunset, it's a long drive to be shooting it in the middle of the day, not worth it with the mid-day haze & smoke of distant fires..

Thanks for the feedback. As I mentioned to someone recently, this would be a scouting trip for a pro photographer just to find places and times to shoot. But, I'm not a pro and I'll have to make due with a limited amount of time. Most of my trips turn into road trips once I get to a destination. I just try to get the best shot I can wherever I happen to be whenever I happen to be there. But, I am definitely considering changing my trip from fall to the spring. If I decide to go in the spring the dates would be 5/27-6/6.

Two suggestions:
1. Follow the Columbia River (Oregon side) to Astoria, and begin the coast drive from there.
2. Get fold-out maps of Oregon and of California:
Take all the roads that leave US 101 and follow the coast- yet return to 101 at some point further south.
If you stay on US 101 all the way- you'll miss many of the best parts of the Oregon coast.

Before we went, we had all of these travel guides sent to us:

I think I mentioned it earlier, but, reading Charlie's mention of following the coast made me remember the 3 Capes Scenic Loop. It's off of 101, and I consider it a must see.

One of the places I want to shoot is Thor's Well, of course. How do you protect your gear while shooting with waves splashing around you/on you?

With your body

Prepare to be soaked. I wouldn't even bother with grads if you use them. Just shoot an exposure for the sky and then focus on the water action. It's best to just bring some tshirts to wipe your lens and drape over your gear. Never keep your eye in the viewfinder for too long if its rough. I saw two guys get blasted and they never saw it coming. 2 dead 5dmkiii's.
