Is early September a good time to visit as far as weather and crowds?

We spent March thru September in Oregon this past year. I would consider March thru May, even June to be the best Oregon months. The spring colors are magical shades of green. The water is still flowing nicely at any one of about a million waterfalls. In August and September the farmers start burning the fields, so the air is nasty and much of the green is gone.
But, there may be some fall colors, and the weather is still decent.

Just another thought, a couple of years ago, my son in law got an absolutely gorgeous panorama of crater lake, from the east side, looking west. While the air was crappy, and everything was on fire up there. Just after sunset the color in the sky was off the charts.

Thanks, Tim. If you had to pick one, would you choose the last week of May or first week in September?

May for sure. September is tan, May is green.

Thanks again. Is the rim road closed around Crater Lake in May?

Last year May 20th the north entrance just opened. It closed a couple of days later when they had a little snow. At that time the rim drive was still closed. Here is what it looked like from the west side.

Nice shot. I've wanted to visit Crater Lake since I saw it in a geology class in college!

For some nice waterfalls look in to Silver Falls State Park.

If you get as far south as Prairie Creek State park in N. CA, be sure to take the drive out to Gold Bluff Beach and walk up Fern Canyon. Take your tripod.

I'll only have time this trip to drive as far south as Crescent City and the Drury Parkway. Thanks for the suggestions.

PC State Park is "on" the Drury Parkway.

Lots of good suggestions. Late May would be better. Don't blink and miss the Gold Beach area and the lower Rogue River Jerry's Jet Boats. The Painted Hills are well worth the detour in late spring too.

I'm confused by the contradicting recommendations and I live here.

Yes, Cannon Beach can be annoyingly crowded Memorial day to Labor day, but it's a quick 2 hours from PDX and you get iconic views from Ecola Park and of Haystack Rock. A search on 500px will give you an idea.

September is my favorite time of the year here, it's sunny and usually still warm, though as others have said, the Coast is completely unpredictable and varies day to day (even hour to hour). The Coast Range is green year round. Bend and Eastern Oregon are high desert, I think they're more brownish year round.

In the Willamette Valley, it is more temperate and they burn the grass fields at the end of summer. You will get nicer scenery in May, but it will likely be raining and cooler, summer doesn't start here until AFTER the Rose festival, mid-June.

You have a great trip planned, you'll hit the highlights and will see a wide variety of scenery: sandy beaches, rugged coastline, farmland, desert, mountains...you'll be busy.

Scott, let me expand on what I said. I agree that the fall is the best time on the coast for good weather. And Oregon is always pretty darned green, generally speaking.

However, lets take for example Silver Falls State park. In spring the green is just off the charts. The leaves are fresh, clean, and just about every shade of green you could imagine. Everything is GREEN. Then, when the rain stops for the summer, things slowly change. The dust in the air slowly settles on the leaves, and well, everything else for that matter. The grasses slowly turn tan. The volume of water flowing slowly drops to the point that some of the falls are just sad. The place just looses some of its magic. In the spring your more likely to get an overcast day, so you can shoot anytime of the day.

So, if seascapes are your thing, the weather is going to be better in the fall. If green and waterfalls are your thing, spring is going to be better.

The rim drive around Crater Lake is weather dependent. I have been there when there is 30 foot wall of snow, and it didn't open until after 4th of July. Some years it is open by Memorial Day (not often).

trip check.org is a good website to check for road conditions with webcams. The south entrance is open all year round. Marine layer starts to roll in around July, so a lot of times you get socked in at night. Winter/spring have the best sunsets up here, in my opinion

That sounds like fun, though a bit stressful and hectic going to a different location every single night, but we all have different tastes with our traveling. I would personally get rid of Cannon beach and tack on another night in Bandon. Canon Beach really isn't all that scenic compared to your other options.

I concur with skipping by Canon Beach and spending more time at Bandon. Bandon looks different during sunrise and sunset so you need to be there for both times IMHO.

Yes, I was at one State Park waiting for just the right moment for the sun to set and the park attendant was standing right by me tapping her toes. I guess I was interrupting her dinner time.
