Hey Jim - you're right - it's a great place for a shot! Love the look of the light,

If I had to make a call on the sailboats I'd probably lose 'em - but that's just me. I like photos that appear as wild and remote as possible, so I get rid of man made elements when I can. (well, unless I'm using one for a subject, like a cabin or something )

Thanks Steve, I am glad you like it. I am with you on wanting the shots to look wild and remote, that's my usual style, but I thought perhaps the Sailboats could add a little different feel to the shot... but that's what I get for thinking... I printed this today, and I can't say that the sailboats add to the shot, so I will remove them later on tonight.

Hey Craig,

Thanks so much. I am thinking I will sink those sailboats later on tonight...

I am glad you see the sharpness in this shot. Shooting with the D800 and the 14-24mm, that is one sharp combination! One almost doesn't even need to do the normal sharpening in the processing of the shot.

It is sharp! The colors and depth are nice as well. Not a huge fan of the sailboats, but only because it makes the photo feel unbalanced to me, like something is missing on the left side horizon.

Just curious, did you get any more color toward sunset?

Keep the sailboats, great detail to the total image. I like this image.

Jim,

Thats the nice thing about visiting the ocean, the tide reveals and hides treasures. My worse fear is getting stranded when I venture off and the tide comes in haha.

I like what you have going here. The inclusion of the sail boat adds a nice human element which I think adds to the shot here. At least its the nice sail boats.

You I think if the sky was more dramatic and the colors light up this spot could be a fantastic place to revisit.

I like it Jim. The conditions are decent, but the best aspect of the shot is definitely the composition. Almost every cervice of rock and finger of water if pointing directly to the sun. Nice job with that, and a very fitting title When I crop a bit less then half the sky out it really makes the convergence more obvious to me, so that might be an option.

More contrast isnt really a good way to increase sharpness for web Kee. It will look overly crunchy, and probably wont reflect what the full size image actually looks like.

Thanks so much Justin. Yeah, the sky never went crazy, just some gold color as the sun broke through a bit. As for the crop, I actually did that on a 2nd photo I am working on from that session, so I will give it a try on this one.

Hey Matt, thanks so much! Yes, thanks for confirming that the shot is sharp. I did a version without the sailboats, it will be interesting with the comparison how it stands now.

The clouds were too think on the horizon itself. As is sometimes the case at the beach, the best color can be the bit of golden color as the sun still is able to kind of break through before it hits the horizon. It sure would have been cool had the clouds been able to light up with pinks and reds! But that will be for next time...

Jim,
As one of the first to comment (somewhat) negatively about the sailboats, I have to say that your revision with them removed is somewhat bland! A close call, but I think now that the shot is better with them in.

Hey David,

Thanks so much for looking again. I think it helps when the difference can be seen.

I really like the clarity of the scene Jim. Good move removing the sailboats.
The way you compose makes the rocks converge towards the sunsetting.

Aptly titled Jim. The clouds and the rocks both seem to be converging on the sun. The pastel sky works really well with the glistening rocks. I'm in the sailboat-less crowd on this one.

Great shot Jim. Nice foreground elements drawing the eye to the setting sun.

Hey Jim, I went back and forth on sailboats or no sailboats and my conclusion is I like em both! Nice work man!

Nice shot Jim. A bit understated in the colors but very nicely so. Great mood.

Sharpness for web is a matter of good sharpening protocol. I think some may not realize you can get nearly identical or even identical results from inferior lenses and f/stops verses top lenses/f/stops and even focus bracketing. Where the differences are profound is in a substantial enlargement (like maybe a 12 x 18 on up).

I love the lines leading toward the sun, and the colors. However, I wish the water was just a little bit blurred. I think that might emphasize the lines in the rocks, simplify the comp, and complement the clouds a little better.

Very interesting shots. What great texture. I much prefer #2, with the boats removed. I think another fitting title might have been "Divergence".
