I love the backlit portraits that I see on this site (and elsewhere). I'm thinking about adding the 85mm f1.8G to my lens arsenal but saw a few reviews that knock it for flare/ghosting. I'm curious if others have opinions of this lens for this scenario, good or bad. I know the 85 1.4 has the nanocoating but it's quite a bit out of my price range (I'm not a pro, mainly just family pics).

I have the 85 f/1.4 and am quite happy with it. However, I've heard nothing but good things about the 85 f/1.8 from its owners, and all the images I see from it are solid. I haven't heard of any flare/ghosting issues, but any lens can flare if you shoot into the sun, and any lens can ghost if you shoot with a slow shutter speed and add a flash.

I've noticed no major difference between my 85 f/1.4G and my wife's 85 f/1.8G other than that the bokeh is a little more creamy on the f/1.4G, and that the color rendition is a little more properly saturated.

You can't go wrong either way. Especially with the 85 f/1.8G at 1/3 or 1/4 the price.
