p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Banff & Jasper

A few more images from a trip to Banff & Jasper in October. Ron had suggested he wanted to see a few shots showing off he area, so here they are (along with a few other images with a narrower scope of view). All shots are hand held with 7D. I'll never claim to be a good landscape photographer, but I hope these images will suffice to give a sense of he beauty in the area.

1. Peyto Lake - Named for Bill Peyto, who was an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area. The lake is glacier fed, so its water holds a lot of "rock flour", which contributes to its intense blue color. It looked great the day we were there, but looks even better when lighting conditions are more favorable. Elevation is about 1850 metres.

2. Peyto Lake Alluvium - The major creek that feeds the lake is a lot broader in the spring and early summer. In the fall you can view the wide alluvium that is left behind. This shot was taken about 3/4 of way down the trail from the Bow Summit viewing area (about 2100 metres).

3. Peyto Lake At Lake Level - Very nice view from the south end of the lake, looking north down the valley formed by the Waputik Range.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_1291VladAtPeytoLake_zps2243fc40.jpg

4. Peyto Lake Shoreline - I really like the way the steep, rippled lake bottom showed in the clear water. The focal point on this shot was at 1.2 metres.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_1284PeytoLake_zps129692ed.jpg

5. Hilda Creek Trail Icefield - This is a repost of an image showing off the icefield with the sun spotlighting a jumble of show and ice. Reposted to provide reference for the next image.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_1469HildaRidge_zps3ae18fd5.jpg

6. Hilda Creek Trail Icefield Wider View - This is what I saw from the top of the moraine we were hiking on. You can see the spot light is off the ice formations in the above picture. I had to wait for that light to move down to that area to get the above shot with my 400mm.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_1422HildaRidgeBanff_zps2008b9ce.jpg

7. Hilda Is Icy Cold - Another image of the ice I found in Hilda Creek. In this one, you can see the creek water bubbling around the icicles.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_1627HildaCreek_zpscd2bc2de.jpg

8. Jasper Elk - On the way back home, we found this fellow enjoying his cud. The elk was right next to that large rock, and the best light was coming from the boulder side (right), but the rock blocked the opportunity for any good golden light images. He would just not move, even when some people got pretty close.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_1685JasperElk_zpsf35cabc8.jpg

9. Jasper Elk - A bit tighter view.
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp263/kccollett/IMG_1687JasperElk_zps3a3352ce.jpg

I hope you enjoyed viewing these images. Any crits and nits are welcome.

Ken,

These are all fantastic! I think you are selling yourself a bit short on your landscape photography skills

I would pick 1,2,3,4 and 7 as my favs of the set. Well done documenting a beautiful place!

Very nice job of showing off the BJNP area Ken. I've been there many times but haven't really done much of the hiking. I lived in Edmonton for 3 years.

Hi Ken,
I have been to Banff and Jasper but in the summer.
You must be able to take the cold well! I would be dressed for the Arctic

Very nice captures!

Ken

2 is very very good. Excellent comp, excellent color contrasts, that's a poster or jigsaw puzzle.

Really nice set Ken. I really like the second image from Peyto Lake. The contrast between the sand and blue water is really cool… so very abstract.

Thanks for stopping in Geoff. I spent about 8 weekends in the mountains this past summer/fall. Cannot get enough of the place.

Thanks for commenting BB. I abhor the cold, but since I live here I try to dress accordingly so I can still enjoy the outdoors and not die from exposure.
