Hi there.

Do you like the composition with or without waves? (1 or 2) I like the waves for the dynamism and unusual symmetries they create, but I also like the simplicity of the second shot. Your thoughts? Any other suggestions?

Technical - M Type 240 + Voightlander 21mm Ultron f/1.8.

1. With waves

2. Still water

Here is my take. I think you captured a "moment" in time. a very calming moment when you just get into the image and want calming. In the first image, the slower shutter speed and the rushing water disrupts the moment and creates a sort of chaos, thus, distracting to where the water & lines are leading you...to the sunset (I think). I am a huge fan of motion, slower shutter speeds, and capturing nature in motion. But, IMO, I like the second image better...not for technical reasons, but for the feel it gives me. Others may feel differently, but I like the 2nd image better for this reason. I want to like the first image better because that falls in my taste / genre and style. Thanks for posting!

I like the dynamics of the first here. Adds more interest and contrast to the capture for me. I would also consider cropping the jut of terra firma in the foreground.

I think I like the calmer mood in the second image. I also don't really like the foreground rock "triangle". Also the horizon needs to be levelled.

Very nice image none the less and great colours you captured.

I agree with Douglas on all points, I prefer the first, the white of the water is a nice contrast to an awesome sunset. I also agree that the bottom rock formation is a bit distracting. Both are really nice images, but I prefer the first.

I can't really decide which I like best (sorry, they both have a calming effect), however the first one leaves me wanting to see where the water is coming from on the right.

Both are good but better with the triangle cropped out.

agree with arbitrage 100% -additionally the colors are overdone and the light is too compressed imho.

Crop the bottom rock out of number 2 and I prefer that one. I like the calmness of it.

I like the second one better, but this is not to say I don't like wave action. Maybe a longer exposure with the wave crossing the width of the channel, or another wave, may have worked better. To me, this particular mass of foam is sort of ugly and intrudes on the rest of the composition. If you get the chance, I'd go for more experimentation in the arrangement of the channel within the frame, emphasis on the cloud reflections, and water movement as the tide changes. The first image is a lesson by doing; the second image gets you off to a beautiful start.

I agree, I like the images better without the bottom triangle. Between the two, I like the second better for the simplicity and less saturation.

#2, if you crop off "most" of the near triangle of rock. I think it helps define the space and depth. But the triangle as shown just seems a little out of its proper plane. Just take the bottom 2/3rds of the triangle out and print it. You got a winner.

Hey Arka,

Hmm.... a cool study here...

I like #1 if you crop the bottom triangle rock out, as that puts the wave more at the bottom, and helps create some better leading lines.

But then #2 I think is best with that rock triangle left in. Though if you look, your exposure or processing is not the same even though these are near identical shots. #2 is brighter and you have a pretty hot horizon in areas.

Now for both, there is one thing that bothers me, and not sure if you had any solution because there is only so much we can control. But I wish in both shots that large blue area wasn't in the sky. I think for both shots, that blue area tends to throw the shot out of balance. It's the brightest area in the scene, and the eye can't help but go focus on that. And that's not where you want the to go.

1st one by a long shot (i think the first one does need to retain the triangle rock though, without it, the waves are too much and it becomes a lesser image)

I'm gonna go with #1, but I agree with the thoughts about cropping out the bottom triangle.

I prefer #1 because of the way the white foam balances the red cloud - it gives me almost a sense of being upside down.

cheers,
Glen.
