p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Grand Canyon temperature inversion

I took my family camping last week at Zion, including a fantastic daytrip to Bryce Canyon where there was a foot of snow from the latest storm 10 days ago. We were going to try the Grand Canyon on the way there but decided to wait until the drive home.

We drove down Highway 89 from Zion and crossed Glen Canyon. Bluebird skies down there but we had just descended from a massive fog bank. We started the ascent to the east entrance of the South Rim. Cold, snowy, but clear. All of sudden it was completely foggy, had to slow down even. Thick fog all the way to the entrance station.

Right after the station we exited the fog bank to blue skies again but we saw the Grand Canyon completely socked in just below the Desert View tower. Only a couple hundred yards behind us was a wall of fog. 34 degrees but no wind at all. I understood the temperature inversion and was disappointed, figuring it was a common occurrence. I did what I could to frame it and used a polarizer. A German couple was near me. I looked over at them and the woman cursed and started crying because of the fog, they had traveled a lot farther than me and I felt bad for her.

We drove along the canyon rim, the fog was burning off a bit but nothing that drastically improved the photo possibilities. When we got to the main visitor station the fog abruptly stopped, but it was late afternoon (3pm) and I could see the fog was filling back in. I hoped that the couple I had seen made the drive further in.

I was surprised by this PetaPixel post saying that it was a once a decade phenomenon. I am thankful to have seen it (I had never seen the canyon before) and in retrospect should have stayed later and shot more. Anyway, here is what I was able to do with the conditions.

Way cool, glad you got to see the inversion. I would have been disappointed too if that was my only chance to see the canyon; it's worth a return trip, I've been there twice, and stay a few days.

Wonderful captures of a rare moment! By the way, second image top left you've got some dust on the sensor. Might wanna give it a bit of a cleaning (on the pic and hardware.)

Just from the one viewpoint, 29 miles of fog.
