Hi Jim,
I love the sky in this scene, it looks like ripples in sand after the tide has left, you could almost turn the image 180 degrees and still have a believable seascape, provided you doctored the pier buildings of course!!! I think my preference is for number one, gotta love a red sky, cheers, Bill.

Thanks so much Bill, I am glad you liked the shot. Huntington Beach has a pretty big and popular pier, so when I shoot there it just depends on the clouds whether I chose to include or exclude the pier in the shot. In this case the clouds surrounded the pier in such a way as balance the composition best with it still in the shot.

Beautiful shot Jim. The bold colours are wonderful. I like the cropped version better as it pulls me into the image a little more...feel like the onrushing water is just about to engulf me. Nice shot.

Hi Harry,

Thanks so much, and I am glad you like the shot. I had the same thoughts and that's why I tried this cropped version. But when cropping I had to sacrifice part of the clouds and as others mentioned those clouds are cool too. So that's why I posted both, as my mind see's both sides as why both shots would work, and so I thought I would get some input from everyone here.

Jim,

Oh that pier, must really visit. I like the first one because of the stronger sunset colors. I just love that vibrant red. I'm not sure if its my monitor or the viewing size but the water seems a bit crunchy (more contrast) for me. Perhaps I've been shooting water at longer exposures for so long I forgot what it looks like frozen haha. It looks like a sheet of ice, but maybe that's your intention or maybe its my screen.

the cloud patterns are great, I love it when the clouds break like that and you shoot it with a UWA, really draws you in.

Just wow - what a capture!
I think I'd actually like a crop between the two, the first has just a bit too much beach, the second not quit enough IMO. However, it's a very, very minor nit. My biggest grip is that I wasn't there

I like the first image better Jim because I like it. The colors really pop, draw me in and keep me there. The image makes me want to bring my chair to the end of the pier, chill with a warm Milk Stout and watch the sunset without my camera gear. ;-)

Great shot Jim. Those clouds are pretty killer. The scene looks a lot more inviting then the 2 feet of snow up here haha

Love the colors Jim. It's always sweet to have a sky like this. Both are great, but if I had to choose I usually think what would look best on my wall. After staring at both for a few minutes I would say #1 does it for me. I'm not sure why, but it just does.

Very nice images, Jim. I kind of prefer #1 since it has more of a variety of color in the sky than the cropped version. I presume both of these are single exposure shots?

Jim, I like the original, leaving a little room at the bottom. Amazing texture and color in the sky. The skies have been great all week. We just had another amazing sunset tonight in Carlsbad.

Thanks so much Todd, I am glad you like it. That's great that you had a good skies down there too. It seems like you guys can socked in a bit too much with the marine layer sometimes. I know I have I think 5 different sessions from the beaches at Sunset here in the last 2 weeks alone, it's a great time here to be shooting at the beach!

Terrific shots Jim. I’m liking the broader spectrum of colors in he first shot - shows more of the brilliant red we’ve been getting as of late. Just wish I could get down there to enjoy it and try to capture it!

Cheers!

Greg

Hey Greg, thanks so much! Yeah, you need to get down to the beach, it's been sure sweet the last couple of weeks, I have gotten some killer shots from there lately.

I love the expanse of the first shot; the variety of colors in the sky is simply stunning. I also really like the reflected colors in the water and how soft (not sure if that's the best terminology) they are.

Hi Cal,

I am really glad you liked the look in the first one. I know I really liked capturing and going as wide as I could with that 14mm. So much cool light to take in.

I'll take the tighter crop here. You are still haunting my old home break I see. Excellent image and perspective.

Hey Tim,

Thanks so much, I am glad you liked that one.

Yep, I am still at old HB quite a bit. It's still my favorite place to run, so it makes it easy to kill two birds by running first and shooting second if there are conditions worth shooting.
