We have all been reading buckets of information and seeing tons of samples from the two FE primes, but I'm actually curious about the "cheap" kit zoom. It only adds $200 or so to the price of the A7, and would give me something that my SLR/RF primes don't cover- flexibility and AF (and sealing)- so I'm considering it.

Does anybody here have it yet? Thoughts?
Huff hasn't written about the zoom yet.

ALSO- if there are any Korean users on here who have purchased it locally (or any other Korean Sony), I'm wondering if Sony cameras here (KOREA) can be changed to English.... Sony Japan cameras can't.

I'd imagine the zoom will be just fine, nothing amazing- but I'm curious about the build, feel, and AF speed. Those are the more important things for me on the "$200" kit lens.

I think imaging-resource has A7 samples taken with the kit lens (not sure if I can post the link here).

The lens is a little larger than I expected.

Personally for "$200" I think it is worth it if you think you will use it. The build felt adequate, plastic all around but certainly better than most kit lenses I've used (Canon). Don't expect it to feel like a Zeiss 16-70, not as smooth. The zoom is mechanical, both control rings are firm and feel similar to what I remember from the Sigma 50 1.4... which is somewhat grainy. The lens stays quite compact throughout the zoom range... the front element only extends about 1cm. Colors, contrast and edges will certainly be sacrificed from the FE primes.

I'm looking forward to your images with it Phillip... but I'm pretty confident you could make a pinhole look good.

I'm not expecting excellent optical performance but it should be convenient for times when you don't want to use a prime lens. It's also weather sealed like the rest of the Sony FE lenses.

It's not impressive, but not too bad either. A decent walk-around zoom at f/8 considering the price, size and weight
