Stayed overnight in the park on the way to Glacier NP. Was treated to quite a nice sunrise with a nice fog bank. Color is nice, but I'm liking this B&W pano format currently. (click to show black background)

Is the image too dark, you think? I wanted dark and contrasty, but maybe worry whites are too low.

The darkness in this shot gives very moody atmosphere and I like it a lot that way. When viewed in black background, yes, it is stellar. How many shots combined? Also how long did you have to hike to get to this location? Well captured Derek

I liked its mood too.

The hike was quite easy. I think we pulled off along side the road not too far into the park and ran up a hill, it took a couple of minutes and wasn't really planned. We arrived in the dark the night before and didn't really know the park too well, so we just started driving around at sun-up looking for a suitable overlook.

This was just one shot with my D800e. It sort of had to be a pano shot given that nothing in the foreground or sky was of any interest. 36mp comes in quite handy for shots like this.

i am so glad to know all this information. Always hiking is up against for me since I am not an avid hiker especially with heavy gear. Also since I am shooting with D800, it is good to know its capability of producing this kind of pano from one shot. I enjoyed your photo here. Thanks for your reply to my questions.

Normally I'm not a fan of B&W images but I like this one Derek, this is good. You didn't happen to take a drive down the Enchanted Highway while you were in the area did you? We did a few years back and I had as much fun photographing that as I did the two sections of the National Park.

A nice moody image. Maybe a tad too dark?

Hi Derek,

I like the composition, the pano format is good. But like Maji I think this is too dark. It looks like the sun is up at this point, but being so dark gives it a bit of an odd feeling.

Yeah, seems especially dark on my work monitor here. I'll try to post a brighter version here.

I've heard of this park but not seen much of it in photographs, much less visited it myself. It looks like an interesting place and I like your approach to the composition of this photograph. (To my eyes, it seems very dark, though.)

I like this a lot. I'd be interested to see a version that was a little lighter, but I'm not sure I'd prefer it to the original. I really like all the beautiful details in the sunlit trees (left center). Don't change that area much!

Beautiful North Dakota landscape! I kinda like the darker way this is processed, but yeah maybe a bit too dark... valley fog is awesome and really makes this very nice! -Mike

Hmmm, Not sure what to think here. It's very good for a black & white conversion, but I have always wanted to go back up there to try some morning sunrise shots. I've seen some spectacular ones with blazing colors. Did you try any of those?

Also, did you notice the lights from the fracking boom? I've heard the night sky is now being replaced with a continuous glow..

I like it!

I do think it is slightly dark, and there is noticeable fall off (darkness) on the left. I'd be tempted to do a graduated luminance adjustment there for balance, and maybe a slight increase overall (whites?). Having said that I still think it is very nice as is!
