p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · EDIT - The Cave {Shark Fin Cove - Davenport}

Hello All,

I shot this inside a cave in Shark Fin Cove. This was shot with the Samyang 14. I blended 4 exposures. 1 for the inside cave, 1 for the cliffs, 1 for the waves and one for the sunset and sky. I wish the sky was better but it was low clouds near the horizon that was barely visible. How confounding as the previous day I shot the pier it was good clouds but blocked the sunset light so the cave area was dark. I shot today and got great light on the cliffs but no clouds to fill the sky. One of these days I'll get both

For some strange reason whenever I shoot this area of the coast, pelicans always get in the shot .

EDIT: Thanks for all the comments. I cropped the right side a bit and lightened that side as well

C&C Welcome,

Jason

Hey Jason,

That is pretty cool. I can imagine it was not an easy shot, but the blending looks great.

Good job, Jason. This certainly is looking out. The right side could be a bit brighter.

What an unreal location. If this was close by, I would head there again and again for epic conditions. I would say if you composed slightly more to the left it would feel more balanced, or just crop off a tad of the right.

Do you know much about how the tides come into this place? Will high tide be dangerous or would it give you the opportunity for some foreground action? Is your back up agaist the cave wall or is it a full tunnel? Thanks!

Jason,
Nice image! I agree w/Jeffrey, the right side could be a bit brighter.

I have visited this site recently & thought about a cave-level view.
Now I guess I have no excuse!

Thanks for posting

Thanks Jeffrey for the critique. I lightened the right side to taste.

Justin,

Don't worry I'll be going back for sure. The cave has an opening at the back so I can escape when the water rushes too high . I had a similar thought as well, I waited for the water to come higher but the sun began to set. I couldn't wait till sun hit the horizon too much as I lost a lot of the nice light on the left side rock. If I had good clouds there may have been nice reflected light.

I'll be checking the weather report daily :P

Hello Jason,

This must be an interesting place to visit and to photograph, especially.
Yes, I like your composition with mysteriously appearing pelicans whenever you are there!
Since you edited the originally posted image and replaced it with edited one, I would not know what the difference is. I am sure all these experts in photography advised you properly.

Anyway, you mentioned that you will go back to this cove again. I am wondering if you can step back a little bit further and photograph the opening a little bit smaller with the foreground including the inside of the cove more. That way perhaps the result may show more mystery. I hope those pelicans appear again!!

I personally would not mind of dark area as dark to give some depth to the scene rather than trying to show details in the dark area. Sometimes boldness prevails in making a point. That is my humble opinion.

Kee
