Hi everyone! I hear a lot about this forum so I decided to join up. I'm surprised to see the skill cap to be so high here! I feel a bit intimidated, but at the same time I would like to take part in a community that will help me learn more and grow.

Anyway, a little bit about myself... I always loved tinkering with cameras ever since I was young. Four years ago, while I was in college (studying computer science and psychology), I decided to spend a chunk of my financial aid money on a Canon EOS 7D. I know... so bad.

I mainly used the 7D to take family and vacation photos. This year, I started taking photography and editing more seriously and learned how to shoot in manual mode, use speedlights and all that jazz. It has become a dream of mine to find paid photography work and make it a sustainable job. I really love taking pictures of people. The reactions they give me after receiving their images are priceless.

Here are some shots that I have taken in the past few months.

Bre, the first model I have ever shot.

Laura, the second and most recent model I have shot.

Another shot of Laura.

I have more photos at my website: http://www.tuanvo.com/

My portfolio is kind of measly since I only started formally shooting portraiture this year. I'm hoping to create more images soon.

In the past couple of weeks, I've spent time researching gear and pulled the trigger on a lot of goodies! I just obtained a 5DIII, 135/2L, PCB Einstein, accessories, and lighting support recently, but haven't put them to use yet. I am in the middle of piecing everything together and learning how to use it all. I'm very excited and hope that I can get greater image quality from all of these upgrades.

Prior to this, I have been using my 7D with a 35L and 70-200 f/2.8L II in conjuction with Yongnuo speedlights, Apollo softbox, and white umbrella. I had recently sold my 70-200 and am hoping the 135L will become a good successor.

That is pretty much the end of my introduction and summary of my photography journey so far. I hope I didn't bore anyone.

See you all around the forums!

nice work - there is nothing wrong with a 7D, so no need to apologize.

Excellent shots. Welcome.

As Ron says, join in the discussions too. You don't have to be here for a decade to have an opinion. Tell us what you like about different shots, etc.

You are a natural talent. All three of these would make great jewelry shots. The first needs earrings or a fat diamond ring. The two male subjects on the website show an ability to do editorial and journalistic. You have invested in the right equipment although you may want that 70-200 for editorial. Think beyond portrait to commercial. Not everyone can do it right. Editorial is a rare gift. Corporate. Fashion. Jewelry. Commercial product, service and personnel. Everything has a real commercial look to it. Some lighting a little too hot, but that's just a detail. LA? Start looking at commercial and working for the studios doing talent. Take a lot more photos. For clients. Get real busy. Immerse yourself. Watch, look and see. Details. And how to tell a story. Have fun.

Thank you for your praise, critique, and guidance!

I would love to wedge myself into the industry to do editorials and commercial work, but have no idea where to start and who to contact. It's all a bit overwhelming. However, I will definitely continue to draw in inspiration, do my research, and keep on shooting to build a stronger portfolio.

If you're new to this, I'd say you have an outstanding artistic and technical eye for portraits. Nice work.

I'm new to portraiture as well. Should she edit out the 2nd catchlights? Should she have a light on so as to close down the pupil more? Not judging, just asking. These shots and this style appeals to me very much. Great work!

Thanks for the compliment! And those are excellent questions! To be honest, I never really thought about those things...

The more I look at it, the more I think that slightly smaller pupils would look better. I will experiment with the pupils in my next shoot, if I can remember to.

As far as the second catchlights go, I really don't know. I always see two catchlights in beauty photography and it's only natural due to clamshell lighting so I decided to keep them.

Thanks for bringing these topics up. It gives me a bit to think about.

The first is very nice mate.
Your pupils are large as there isn't enough ambient light in the scene (you might know this already)
Usually the modelling lamp from the strobes would fix this.

The other two shots are nice but a little hot for me.

With that said welcome to the forum and look forward to seeing more from you.

Regards
Bud

Thanks for the feedback!

I shot these with speedlights in a dark room so I had no modeling light to work with at the time, BUT I did recently purchase an Einstein strobe that has a modeling light so things should be better in my future shoots.

A handful of people have told me that those two shots are a bit too hot. I will be careful next time and try to expose correctly. I picked up a light meter recently; maybe that will help!
