Hello All,

Made a visit to Davenport's old pier. I didn't have time to climb down but the clouds covered up the sunset anyways so my original plan and composition for the piers went out the window. I decided to do a few shots with the big stopper and a ND+GND combo.

C&C Welcome,

Jason

Very nice, especially the B&W shot.

Hey Jason,

That area sure is looking cool. Nice job with adjusting your plans. For me, #1 really stands out.

Hello Jason,
I like the B/W shot a lot.
With the big stopper and a ND+GND combo, the exposure is 3 min.
Did you have any color casting from the big stopper? Since you converted the image into b/w, I would not be able to see the actual color but I would like to know how you managed the color casting inherent in the big stopper.
Thanks for sharing.
Kee

I like both the shots, but the B&W is more striking.

Looks familiar somehow... ;-)

By the way, have you noticed the same weird thing there that I have, namely that you can do a multi-minute time exposure and none of the birds on the old pilings move?!

(Cool cloud deck in #1)

Thanks Jim. you SoCal'ers probably get better sunsets at the beach. Winter time in Norcal, the fog bank just rolls over the sunsets and its a hit or miss to get a nice one

Thanks Kee,

Actually only the BW shot is with the big stopper. That was about 5mins at iso 100. The other one is 0.9 GND and 0.9 ND stacked. That was only 25 sec exposure.

haha I know Dan. Actually I saw your picture of the pier on your blog and that inspired me to go there. I didn't even know that existed. I was going to make my way down but the sunset wasn't nice and I was sure I can go down, but I wasn't sure if I can come back up. I'd have to pack a rope. The cliff area seems to have a trail, probably from people going down but it looked pretty steep. Have you made your way down there?

Speaking of the birds, that was what I was thinking. I wasn't sure if they were sleeping or just fake birds haha.
The BW shot was a 5 min exposure with the big stopper and some of the birds come out sharp

Maybe they are fake birds!

The photo of mine that Jason mentions is here: http://www.gdanmitchell.com/2010/11/30/abandoned-pier-davenport - and for SF Bay Area folks, it is one of a dozen 18" x 24" prints in an informal little show at a local place where I hang out in San Jose. Let me know if you'll be in the area and I'll see if I can meet you there.

For others thinking of photographing this place, be warned that the descent (and, worse, the ascent!) is not an easy nor safe thing. Jason isn't kidding when he mentions ropes. Usually you can photograph from the bluff nearby.

Scott,

Yeah my next trip I plan to hike down, but I'll probably bring a rope just for safety. There is sort of a trail but its really steep and sandy.

Jason.
