Well.. I was supposed to meet some other photographers at the hotel ground for the sunrise shot of the Watchman from the famous bridge at Zion NP one morning. However, I could not wait for them. I was so eager to go to the park when it was really dark. So I went. After taking starry night at the Watchman.. I was drawn to this blue night sky with clouds coming ready to dance with the sunrise. Well.. stars are still twinkling.. Two pictures I present. Now, don't tell me you want to see the details in the dark area!

Nice job with the silhouette. I have a photo of the Night Watchman lit up by the rising sun and it is pretty neat too. Zion is just an awesome place to visit.

I agree with you. Great place to visit, Zion! If you have your Night Watchman picture, would you please upload it? Love to see Watchman. I get never tired of seeing Watchman, in person, or in picture!

The sky is gorgeous in #1, but the totally black silhouette isn’t doing much for me. In my opinion, silhouettes only work if you have a really prominent and easily recognizable subject. Have you thought about experimenting with blending in the sky from #1, into the detailed foreground of #2? They really aren’t that far off from each other, and doing so would probably better represent what the scene actually looked like.

Thanks for reminding me of the shot you posted on Night Watchman in FM before. I checked the image once more. It was gorgeous shot. Thanks again.

Thanks Justin for your suggestion.

The small amount of added detail is nice and gives me some idea of what the entire scene looks like, however you have lost the "magic" of the sky by increasing the shadow exposure. I would make a quick selection of the sky and mask it out from your shadow adjustment. You have also introduced some sort of selection lines in areas of the sky. Im not sure, but flattening your image might take those away. I've never come across those lines before unless it is a stitched panoramic image.

I do think with some creativity and adding the sky of #1 into the composition of #2 this could be a killer shot. I hope Im not a bother. Im just trying to give some ideas

hmmm.. I still think the composite will be a stellar image.
how about all of the sky in #1 just like it is, then overlay the top half of #2's foreground. Tweek from there.

Thanks for your input with the suggestions of kind of combining the top portion of the #1 and bottom portion of #2. I tried that way, and I found that the results are not that great in that the depth is getting lost. These two are separate shots and they are better of as they are now. That is my opinion. There might be some tweaking needed for each. Therefore I am now not including whatever the version I tried.

however you slice it, I love that sky shot. Great job.
I hope you get out and do some more of it soon. Maybe if ISON becomes a bit brighter next month you'll give us an even bigger treat!
I sometimes focus on perfectly cloudless nights for milky way astro landscapes and you (in addition to Justin, Jim, Scott, and other FMers that I apologize for not naming) remind me to not neglect the beauty of a partly cloudy starry sky. so thanks!

Hello David,
First of all, thanks for reminding me of ever getting brighter ISON. It would be great to capture ISON. Unfortunately when I am at home, it is rather difficult to get out early in the morning to take pictures of the night sky. However still..I do have a plan of getting out early tomorrow for a sunrise shot at a place of 1 and 1/2 hours driving distance.. but the forecast is.. 90% clouds! But I keep my eyes on the news of ISON.
Thanks for your positive comments. Have a good weekend.
Kee
