No kidding. The images look great from a color and bokeh quality from this lens until I go into like even 50% in C1 and notice nothings in focus, thing makes me feel like a bad photographer and stresses me out. It's probably definitely not for me since the lens just feels "random" to me. 50 1.2 is like twice the price (and weight), but I basically fell in love with it instantly. The 58's half the price and people love it, but I'm basically just fighting with it. It's probably going into that pile of unused gear I'm using for 85 1.2 credit at this point.

Honestly it sounds like this lens, maybe your copy specifically, just isn't for you, which is just fine. I don't see the need for people to defend this lens nor for you to defend not liking it. Different people have different tastes and experiences. I really like this lens personally. In the end I think you're getting better output from your 50 1.2 S, so you should just keep using that, sell this lens and not worry about this thread.

@ JadedWriter, your post p.99 #16 demonstrates admirably why you should sell your lens.

@ urbanwild, your post p.99 #18 demonstrates admirably why you should keep your lens.

Whether the differing experiences and resulting images by JadedWriter and urbanwild are down to differing copies of the lens, differing uses, or differing post processing is unclear and is open to debate.

JadedWriter, going by your uploaded jpegs the details in the subject's skirt in images 1 and 3 look to be in perfect focus but the face and features look very soft. Movement or missed focus?

I put the AF point on the eyes, so you tell me, the lens just does whatever it wants.

I'm at the point where I think my copy of the lens is shite. I have shot stuff similar to this with a Fuji X-T2 and a XF 35F2 (with less experience as a photographer mind you) and haven't had these kinds of focus issues.

Bah, I'd say your lens has some issue as the images you posted are, sorry if this is offensive, totally off, on the Z6II the lens performs better than on a D body if nothing else because of the eye AF, stuff happens even tho I'd be surprised such a lens could come out of the line misaligned.

By the way, I won't mind having a second copy ;-)

Please try it again, on the Z body it should be super accurate with regards to focus, mine been pretty fine with the old Fuji S5Pro as well as with D800, D850 and Z6II

I don't think there is any point in asking them to try again. They have been shooting it on a Z body, and getting consistent results that they do not like. It may indeed be a bad or damaged copy - why keep hounding them to "make it work".

I have shot it a few times on a D5, D850 and Z9, the lens is from my experience just inconsistent. If I have to stop a 1.4 lens down to F4 to get something that's not out of focus, the lens is useless and that's not me speaking from a bokeh junkie perspective, it's me speaking from a versatility perspective as an indoor event photographer where I need a lens to just perform and not have situational sweetspots. If I can't even get away with using this on a $50 photo shoot I can't use it too much for work. I only used this because I literally have money wrapped up in it and I'm honestly trying to give it a fair shake, I've been trying to give it a fair shake for months, but I had a feeling something was off with this thing, probably the day I got it. I have tried living with it, was like, "Ok I guess it's just supposed to look like this," which it isn't because people in here have said at least twice that I can think of that the lens isn't right, so no it's not me using it on the wrong body, I just have a knackered copy of the lens. You would probably have known my experience with this lens if you read far enough or paid attention to what I have said in this thread other than posting your images and going, "why do people say this lens isn't sharp." I use a lot of different lenses on a lot of different bodies and this lens has been a headache (the biggest one) since I got it. I could probably sell you my copy and you'd be like, "This thing isn't right."

I am really sorry for your experience with the 58G, gotta be a big disappointment for not reaching expectations vs the huge amount of money it costs.

I am not an English mother tongue so I am very probably wrong but it seems like you are kind of behaving with me even pointing out that I didn't read enough to remember "your experience" with this lens, when I add comments on gallery shots they are solely intended for my "personal experience" and not towards somebody who didn't get my same results, anzi, I have been watching this thread since ages before actually getting the 58 and I can tell, after over a year I own it, it's not easy lens to handle but when the conditions are right and luck is by my side I am happy with what I get.

Again sorry for your experience

Yeah when "conditions are right" stuff is the determining factor it turns into something I'd probably not use since I don't really keep an eye out for what the right conditions are and literally just shoot. I paid half the price for this as my 50 1.2. I'm not bummed about the money lost, I'm bummed about the overall experience of the whole thing more than anything else. I like to shoot and if what I'm shooting with is leading to stress the whole thing just aggravates me. Not to mention that I want to deliver the best I can to my clients and the performance of the lens on that shoot really just depressed me, I felt like I didn't give her my best.

Blame the lens. I shot the same subject with the Sigma 40 1.4 and Nikon 105 1.4, wide open in the same lighting conditions and the only lens that looked off is this one. Thing didn't get sharp till F4. Had the AF point on the eye and the whole nine yards. Shot it at 1.4, 1.8, 2.2 and then brought to F4 for the last batch, which I didn't even post in here. The lens is the issue, you people love to defend it though. This shoot basically confirms that I'm not keeping it.

Good call there. I don't like gear that seems to fight me or that can't be trusted for focus. Takes away from the joy of photography.

I actually checked my posting history in here. I've been complaining about this lens on and off since August. I will probably have it till my 85 1.2 preorder comes in and call it a day. Will try to experiment some more to see if I like it again, but man my copy seems to have a mind of its own

My intent was certainly not to talk you out of your findings. It was more out of curiosity if you have sharp shots with subject faces in the center of the frame. I think Iíve come to terms that I donít trust the lens for paid gigs and I now have to center the subjects in the frame for best sharpness more so than any other lens I own. This isnít ideal and it is frustrating but I do still love this lens. Thatís of course a deal-breaker for many.

You may have a bad copy but if you love the 50mm f1.2S, thereís limited value in keeping both.

Too bad the new sigma z-mount lens will be a crop sensor lens. It may have been the best of both worlds between the 50mm f1.2s and the 58 f1.4g

Yeah the 50 1.2 is indeed the work horse of my 50's. Now I'm wondering how the Sigma Art 50 I have would've faired. The Art has kind of slow AF, but I never really had sharpness complaints about it, it's just not the 1.2 that lens spoiled me. I'm honestly trying to find a 50 1.2 in DSLR, but it doesn't exist sadly.

Even more than that, it is a shame that the Z cameras force the DX crop when a DX lens is mounted. I bet the 56mm f/1.4 Sigma shot 4:5 crop on a Z7/9 would be pretty sweet and probably caver that part of the sensor. Still a 30MP image, IIRC
