Here is another 5 pack of some of the great action from Haines AK... I literally stood in the same spot from 7AM till 3PM and watched and photographed these amazing eagles. Anyone who is considering an eagle trip should strongly consider Haines in November. I'm hoping to head back next weekend if the weather cooperates. Hope you enjoy the set.

Some pretty cool action! #3 is my fave from the set. I quite like the story being told. Fighting over scraps when there seems to be plenty to eat makes it look like they are just envious of their neighbors lot, regardless of the quality of that lot. Good work Geoff.

It is very strange how they will much prefer to fight over the scraps than to just drag out their own fresh fish as it lays right beside them flopping around as it dies. The action gets more and more intense as it gets down to just the fish head. I think it is somewhat of a social/recreational game even more than wanting to eat. Or it may just be that their nature is to steal as at leaner times they have to scavenge a lot and juveniles aren't able to fish on their own for the first year or two.

November you say. It's on my list. These are great esp. #1, and #5 is a wing tip away from legendary.
Did you stay put b/c of the eagles or were you frozen in place?

Wonderful set Geoff. I've been to Hanes in late August. There are eagles then as well though not as close as you appear to see them

Excellent series. Superb action shots. I agree about the social/recreational game as I've seen a lot of that and a lot of defining the pecking order. Envy your proximity to such a great location.

Good action shots Geoff! Number one is my favorite because it transfers a feeling of regal bird that is our national symbol. With some of the shots I have seen, I almost wish that Ben Franklin had won out with the wild turkey.

Thanks Don. Yes #5 is just short that one wing tip. If you remember my first Haines post had that other action shot also with the clipped wing. Those two shots are 1/12th of a second apart from the same burst.
There are ~300 nesting pairs that are residents of the area so any time of year you can see eagles in Haines. However, the gathering of up to 3000 usually peaks in mid-November for the very late Chum salmon run. One of the last runs in AK with open water. They have the eagle festival that started yesterday and runs through next weekend. So November is the time for maximum action/value.

Thanks Morris. Yes the eagles start to accumulate in late August and even are around in smaller numbers all year. By mid October the numbers start to climb a lot and then mid-November they peak and still lots through to January.

I'm planning to head back on Saturday if there isn't any crazy blizzard to drive through.
