Thanks for the comments Gene, Socrate, and Scott.
Gene: to answer you questions, the first trick is not to post any OOF shots on FM forums I shot for 2 days sun up to sun down, and I came home with 4000 shots. Just by eliminating OOF, clipped wing tips and nictictating membranes got me down to 2700.
I did start out using micro focus adjustments when I got my 600 last spring, but recently I reset all to zero as I found that out in the field it really wasn't MFA that mattered. It was more conditions (like atmospheric effects) and technique that made the difference in getting sharp in focus shots. Also my understanding is MFA values change in different temperature and of course a different distances and they also just change over time with use of the lens and camera. So unless you have very significant MFA values then I don't see the need for it on long lenses. Just the AI servo variability is much greater than most MFA adjustments that people use. I also have never had to send my lens/camera to Canon but I think if you find that a lens and camera need MFA adjustments more than +/- 15 I'd just send it in to have them get it back to normal.
As far as getting crisp/sharp focus, I think just practice with using big lenses helps. All my shots except maybe a couple were handheld but the IS system on these newer Canon lenses is just amazing and the optics on the super telephoto lenses is amazing also. Combine that with the AF on the 1DX and 5D3 and getting sharp shots gets a lot easier. I did have a tripod along but just use it to rest the lens on in between shots.
Scott: The weekend you were up here was actually when I was down in Haines. For sure bring along the passport next time as it is a beautiful drive and even a chance to spot some wildlife on the way.
