Went to the Oregon Coast this weekend. Weather was foggy and intermediate rain. A set from the trip with my new 5DIII:-

The Spouting Horn. The tide was rough and unfortunately I couldn't get a good picture of Thor's Well. Next time. Thanks for viewing.

rough tide is the perfect time to shoot Thors, but unfortunately the most dangerous.

I like the vantage point, but they seem overpowered by the shadows

Thanks Dustin, yeah having the sun directly across made the foreground pretty dark. What do you suggest for the future in such a scenario?

Also, once I got down to the bottom, I took a couple of shots of the Spouting Horn. and when I went upto the Thor's Well, I unfortunately couldn't make out where exactly it was. Everything was covered with the high tide and looked the same to me. haha. I was in hurry so when I climbed back up, I had to leave right away.

Hi Rohan,

That's a tough shoot going right into the sun like that. For me, in all but 1 of them the sun is just too overpowering. And to Dustins point, more could be recovered in the shadow details. But the sun area is so large it feels blinding even here, not sure that was your desire. Using an ND grad could help, but mostly with shots like these, you just have to wait until the sun gets a little lower, or recompose it to get the sun to an edge of the frame and half out of the shot or so.

As for the focus, it's hard to really tell since all of the details are so dark. You are shooting with the new 5DIII so pull some Dynamic Range out of it. It's Canon's latest and greatest so it should have more DR than that.

One other thought. I don't care for the aritificial toning in #1. #4 looks more natural.

Jim

Thanks Jim. Appreciate the comments. I wanted to frame the image with the Sun directly in the background. But also want a more properly illuminated foreground. If it were human subjects I could have used a light reflector. But obviously the landscape is too big a subject for the technique.

How do I pull Dynamic Range? as in zoom in? This was my first shoot with the mkIII. Awesome! and so much to learn!

I am no expert (only there one time) but I am pretty sure the only time to shoot Thors is at low tide. At high tide I think it is covered by water.

For good action at Thor's Well you need about 7'-8' tides at high tide. But yes.. it's dangerous. It was nerve-wracking shooting there not only because of the well.. but depending on where you stand you also have to worry about waves coming from behind you over your right shoulder. When I shot Thor's Well I had crotch deep waves. I didn't lose my footing at all.. but it was scary.

What are you using to process with? If you're using Lightroom to do all of your processing or just to make some adjustments to the raw file before exporting to Photoshop.. play with the shadow and blacks sliders and see what you come out with. Just know that playing with these too much.. especially on a Canon can introduce significant noise. I can't vouch for the DR capabilities of the new 5D3.

Thanks TJ. When I was at Thor's well, it was 4:45 pm. Almost dusk time. Peak high tide was at 4:30pm. The weather was foggy and dark. The waves were very high. I climbed down all the way to the well and when I was down there, everything looked the same, covered with water and waves crashing on my right hand side and coming from straight in front of me. Nerve wrecking indeed.
