p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Question: Havasupai Falls, November

I am planning to be there Nov 22-24, flying by helicopter and staying in campground.
Is anyone else going at the same timeframe?
Also, looks like I have one extra camping spot for the days above (my buddy cannot come.)
If interested, please shoot me PM before Nov.18, otherwise I'll surrender it back to the tourist office.

Its my first time, so any advice on staying/shooting and good day hikes in the area is appreciated.

Thanks,
Sasha.

was just there at the beginning of Oct (this was like my 4th or 5th time in), the weather and water were perfect.

You should have very nice conditions, cooler at night, probably have the sycamores turning color.

In terms of 'dayhikes' there are three main waterfalls New Navajo (upper and lower) between Supai and the Campground. Then comes Havasu, which is at the southern 'end' of the campground, then comes Mooney, which is at the northern end of the campground. You can also hike downstream several miles to Beaver Falls (more of a series of smaller cascades), lots of water crossings and riffles in between for shooting.

I'm heading there in mid-December, so I'll be watching this thread for useful information.

Norm, thanks for the reply!

I looked at your blog just when you just posted night pictures on FM, they are great! I do hope that leaves will change by the time I go there, thats the whole idea.

Sean, looks like there is not a lot of activity in this thread, sorry.

Sasha.

Sasha, anything in particular you want to know? The campsites are first come first served, but I doubt that it will too crowded. You'll have your pick, the tribe is still working on repairs from this summers floods, most sites away from the creek are surrounded by vegetation, but sites on the creek were scoured. Most have picnic tables. There are modern and fairly clean pit toilets. Potable water is from a spring in the middle of the campground. They occasionally have bacteria issues and will post Boil notice if needed. We drank it straight. Water from the creek itself should be boiled or filters... the livestock upstream, other campers bathing in it, etc. Supai village is just that, village. They have a general store, which I've never used. Also a café, but the one meal I had there was pretty bad

Norm,

Thank you for the update, that's very valuable.
Village sewer was flooded recently, so I already got myself SteriPen, that would be awful to come all that way and get sick with stomach bug.
From what I heard, animals and ravens can get to the food, so hard storage boxes recommended.
My concern is night temperatures; forecast shows near or below freezing, but I assume thats for the village, and it will be warmer by the creek.
Were the ladders for hiking to Mooney Falls in a good shape? At some point in the past there was a damage.

yes, like i said, I would not drink from the creek without treating. Water from the spring in the campground is safe, we took larger 2-gal bladders to fill for camp use. regarding critters, yes, I always hang a line between two trees 6-8 feet up. To this line I can tie the food bags, trash bag, and wet clothes. Never had any problems. The tribal dogs will hang around some but are generally well behaved, but will scavenge (and fight) for scraps left around, you can scamper them out of your site pretty easy. I also kept a separate bag hanging for trash. I've always tent camped, no issues

Temps will be chilly looks like mid 30's for lows and 60-70 for highs
I use the NOAA site, as most other commercial site will pull data from the Grand Canyon Village

the climb down Mooney was fine, the ladders are much better this year then previous trips. All chains and ladders were well secured. The lowest ladders were slick from the mist, so make sure you test you footing before putting weight on. The general rule for the climb at Mooney is everyone goes Down in the morning and then UP in the afternoon... it's tough to pass along that section, but that is really for the busy summer season. We were the only ones on the climb last trip.
