Still working on more of my shots of the Haines Eagles. Probably won't be ready to post anymore till tomorrow. So instead I'll post this shot I got on my drive back from Haines. Light was terrible, snowing, pushed the ISO and was working fast before he/she flew off so still underexposed. Shot from the drivers seat, through the passenger side window. Excuse the noise but enjoy this cute little owl. Regular scheduled eagles will return tomorrow

Nice find Geoff! Have only seen one in my life (that I'm aware of), a heck of a long time ago. Always hoping so see another.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. This was actually the first time I've seen an owl in the wild except for a barn owl in the Galapagos. Needless to say, I was very excited when I saw this guy standing on the side of the road.

Geoff, I'm jealous this is what you find on your drive home! None of the objections you raise get in the way of a good image IMHO.

Your description of how you took the shot is interesting and tension was building to get the shot off in time!

I have had horrible luck shooting out a car window in the winter. Seems that often poking the lens out from a warm car causes the front element to fog up. Also a bigger problem is the heat that rises from under the car and really seems to interfere with IQ. Keep those thoughts in mind when shooting from the car if it is very warm inside and if it is running when you take the shots

Dang...........nice find, and nice recovery from your rush to shoot! A run of NR on the BG would be nice but then again the whole feeling is there as it is Nice owl looking at you

Karl

Offering a crop thought and shown NR on BG for reference......

I'm late to the comment stream, and haven't seen any of the Haines shots yet, but the owl is a great catch! I like Karl's crop, but this is one those rare occasions where I prefer the noisier background. TFS. Greg

Thanks for the suggestions Karl. The NR looks good. I usually try to keep all my editing in LR and NR is the one problem as LR can't do a selection for NR as far as I know. Usually I just apply the default chroma NR and leave the Luminance at zero. I have PS and Nik Software so I should probably learn to use them for this type of stuff. As for the crop, I still prefer more room on the left as even though the owl isn't looking that way it is still facing that way and I feel a bit constrained by the crop.

It is your image and should always be to your liking..................I am glad you spoke up for your choice of it In the big open comp I too don't mind the noise too much, the tighter one seems to benefit from it as it becomes more a portrait than an open comp nature shot.
I hope you get more time with these owls! Sweet
Karl
