Found this rather co-operative little blue heron at a local park. I wish the lighting was a little better. C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

I like the pose in #2.

I think you would have been much better off at ISO 800 or higher, f/4, and thus getting the shutter speed up by a couple stops. In my experience, 1/100th is just not fast enough for shooting birds unless they're dead still.

Thank you for all your comments.

I agree binary visions. I should have bumped up the ISO. Not comfortable with 800+ in this camera in poor light. BTW I was shooting wide open

Interesting - #1 & #2 show f/4.5, while #3 & #4 show f/6.3 (a whole stop slower), though they all show the same focal length.

You got some very nice poses. #2 is my favorite.

I was shooting a 500 f4.5 prime. So what I meant to say was that 4.5 is wide open and can't do 4, oh how i wish

Great shots, especially #2 where the motion blur didn't occur. I think you could easily go to 1600 or even 3200 ISO on the 70D. Lots of people have shown good examples from the 7D at those values and I think the 70D would be at least equal or even a little bit better being 5 years newer. (Granted Canon really hasn't improved much). A little noise is better than the motion blur. I'd shoot it wide open at f/4.5 also to help with the SS.

Thanks for sharing.

Better light, some luck to find the bird in the same spot and some good feedback later here are today's pictures. C&C welcome.

Much better! #1 is a classic pose, but I always enjoy the apparent personality of birds as they're looking straight at you. "Yes? Excuse me, can I help you with something?"

What a difference a day makes; the new shots are absolutely beautiful. The light is outstanding and I love the colors in the background. Glad to see the results of the advice from the previous shots. When shooting birds, I try to never let my shutter speed go below the inverse of the focal length (i.e., 500 mm ~ 1/500 s). You can always fix noise in PP, but you can never fix an out of focus shot. Great job!
