I convinced Dan Heitman that we should go up to Whitehorse and try to catch the northern lights.

I kept worrying as the time went on because the forecast alternated between good (when we booked) to bad (as we got closer).

We landed on friday night and looked at the forecast and it showed bettter opportunities closer to Dawson so we drove about 4 hours north hoping..... and got skunked and very tired. And I lost my tripod but that is a different story.

But as we arrived back in Whitehorse - the sky was clear. I guess we should have waited in Whitehorse and ignored the forecasts.

Last night we went out to the campsite at Laberge Lake and wished a low aurora forecast would not turn a clear night without moon into another skunk.

Here are the best pictures of the evening.

Nice, looks pretty much same aurora we got when at the same place last year in Feb. I enjoyed whitehorse, is a pretty cool place...literally

I like the foreground treatment in #4; it completes the view.
The bright star under the bridge in #1 is Jupiter. (For Dan's sake)
Next time you are in the area check-out Policeman's Point; it has a little tighter perspective.

Hey, you finally got your northern lights! Great job, sounds like fun.
Wow, looking at your settings it was quite bright.
I guess we'll leave the tripod story for another day...

Hey Scott,

Nice work on these. #2 and 4 are my favorites. What a great way to see the Northern Lights! One of these days I have to plan a trip to do that as I am probably not going to catch them down here in California anytime soon.

Driving for hours in the dark, that's why it's called "chasing the lights" and it happens to all of us looking for auroras. Nice captures! #4 is my pic.

JimFox: Glad you like 2,4. Whitehorse is a fantastic place for northern lights and animals and landscapes. After driving 10 hours looking for northern lights I was so tired I drove away without my favorite gitzo - it was my favorite tripod with 6' height and large heavy legs. It will be missed but it has sure been worthwhile. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

[Anyone from Whitehorse area - its near the twin lakes or little fox lakes and I am offering a $200 reward]

Dave Bachrach: Too much sleep deprivation is a scary thing. But given that in Calgary, I have to worry about cloud cover, moon too bright, work schedule, and aurora frequency... it was a real treat to have 2/10 forecast that was great and would not even register in Calgary. The caption says 25mm f/2. Were those 25mm shots at wide open f/2.0? and 8 - 10 secs?
