p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · That good day (and night) in Zion
At Zion, on the last day of the shutdown, we got up early with "Seth" at Zion Outdoor Adventure and went up into the Kolob section via Reservoir Road. He said they got 4" of snow up there the day before, and I met him to see if there was any left the following morning. There was, and much more to boot !
Looks nothing like Zion, but he took us to a little corner spot overlooking the northern reaches of Zion (above Lava Point) and we were greeted by the first light and a sea of fog rolling over the treeline.
As we came back down toward Zion, we saw the barriers were down at the Left Fork (Subway). That afternoon, although the buildings were closed (except for the back country desk which had just opened for permits, thank goodness) and the shuttles weren't running, and you couldn't take a car up-canyon, we rented bikes and put on our packs and rode up to spend the afternoon on angel's landing (had it almost to ourselves). Then we rode down for sunset, but there were a lot of clouds, and it didn't look good at the bridge. So we continued west of Zion and saw a few cracks of light.
This scene opened up for a short period of time, and that was the sweet light I posted earlier.
Then the light dimmed again, there was another short burst of very brief, red light coming through. I was just able to catch a late view of the few moments that light lit up another set of formations. It didn't last much more than a minute, and I just caught the tail end of it.

Oops, Seth works at Zion Adventure Company, I think Zion Outdoor Adventure was their old name. (Note: I have no stake or interest in the business, this is not an advertisement or "plug").

Bart,
Both of these are pretty neat, very nice light and color in #2.
I think #1 would also make a very cool pano I really like the dramatic light in the clouds, maybe
top would start at the top cloud line and loose the white sky then find your bottom based on that ?
Regards,
Dean
Thanks all. The clouds were there for my first couple of days, after that it was all just beautiful Utah-blue skies. So we spent the rest of the time hiking and camping all over southern Utah.
Jeffrey: There were barriers at the Canyon and at the permit and nonpermit trailheads outside of Zion and in the Kolob area. My plans were to do what I needed to do to get around, (or at least borrow that guy who was willing to take my camera anywhere to shoot) but that wasn't necessary as it opened our second day.
Dean: I am going to work "cloud waves" a bit, the crop you suggest as well as taking another look at the upper colors (which is why I left it in). To my eye at the time, there was a bit more color in the sky, but it only barely shows here, I think because of some of dynamic contrast masking I did on the clouds. I'll put a little more time on it. And thanks for the suggestion, a quick look tells me it would work.
Deb: Yeah, you missed the clouds for sunset light by just hours. But we made up for it with the hiking and camping in Coyote Gulch, Escalante. I've got to post my "paramecium" shot at Jacob Hamblin arch.
