I recently purchased an Olympus EP5 (I normally shoot with Canon) and took it out to have a play.

I have a funny story to tell. The shoot took place outdoor on a nice sunny morning/noon. So I wore my polarised? sunglass while I shoot. I use LCD screen to look at how I frame my shots (I didn't use the Electronic Viewfinder (EV-4) in this case). I was doing fine until I rotated my camera so I can shoot in Portrait orientation and the LCD turned itself off. I was not able to see what I was shooting! I am thinking in my head that this is a silly feature and I must need to figure out how to turn this feature off. It wasn't until about 10min later that I realised that the reason I couldn't see the LCD in Portrait orientation was because I was wearing my polarised?sunglass, I took it off and all is fine lol, silly me!

Below are a few images taken using this camera and an Olympus 45mm f1.8 lens (90mm equivalent in FF term):

Excellent, well done! Shows what can be done with a m43 system in the right hands.

Great shots, as always, David!

I love polarized sunglasses and have had this challenge on numerous occasions -- phones, cameras, digital displays inside some vehicles. I don't like to wear them for photography because they change the image that my eye sees versus what the camera sees.

I'm curious how much did you have to change your PP techniques for the new camera?

Thank you.
I have not changed my PP techniques with images shot with the Olympus. I was only mucking around as I used the Canon as the main camera on this shoot, it's easy to just hang the EP5 around my shoulder as it weights nothing compare to a DSLR. I only shot in JPG format on the EP5 on this shoot. What I found is I haven't quite get the hang of getting the camera to focus accurately at where I want, I was pressing the touch screen to select my focus point. What I want to do is select a point, then focus and recompose (as that's how I shoot when using SLR). I will have a bit more play with model shoot with it when I have a chance

Lovely set. Some very nice work.

In #2, I find the OOF yellow flowers are hurting rather than helping the shot. Especially the ones by her elbow and hand.

Hi David, nice work as always, i know you're new to this camera but would like to know which one you would choose if you had to have just one of the systems, canon or oly ep-5?

Hi Uzay,

It's a hard question, let's put it this way, I've used the EP5 everyday this 2 weeks (maybe because it's new to me and I want to play with it a bit more but I doubted).

For paid work, I will use my Canon system.

They are my two systesm for different purpose really, I like the EP5 because of it's small size and how light the system is.

Sweet shots with a lovely model. I like her gaze on 3.

I was a non-believer in face/eye detection, but on my Olympus E-M5, I've found that the eye detection is 95% accurate. It's like magic! I don't even have to have the focus square directly on the subject's eye, the camera just finds eyes and focuses! Dunno how they did it. You can even select whether you want the nearest/furthest eye to be focused on, or just let the cam figure it out. It's quite awesome, you might want to check it out.

Hi,
Thanks, yes I did try that, it's quite clever
Hopefully I will have a bit of a chance to use it to photograph people to test this.

Oooo, I wish I had that 45mm for my old PL2! Really love #1 in this set. My PL2 lacks a touch screen, so I either take my chances with the AF, or use the 7X magnifier and MF. The P5 must have cleaned up the colors a lot, my PL2 JPG colors are nowhere near as good as my Canon DSLR. Nice going!

Thanks. The 45mm is relatively cheap compare to other primes and also compare to DSLR lens.
Yes touch screen is an advantage also

Thank you for posting this nice set David, aside from the OOF flower in #2 that distracts me a little i have to say the shots are great especially since you recently got this camera.

I really don't now much about this format but i started reading reviews on the EP-5 as i am looking to regain something i lost by going with a FF body (D3s) which is the ability to carry my camera with me all the time. In my view any kind of street shooting is out of the question for me with the big and heavy D3s. Since i've been working with this body as great as it may be i have been having backaches problem since last summer and every time i feel like going out for some street shooting i simply put the camera down and forget about the idea.

At first glance the EP-5 seems like a good alternative to a Leica. It would of course be my dream camera for such ventures but i have a problem in my head with a camera/lens combo that costs as much as a small car (maybe it's just me). I was considering using the EP-5 as my 2nd body for sport shooting when comes the time for the team pictures. Instead of getting another heavy FF body i could carry this one in one of my photo vest pockets with almost no hassle.

Also read about the 42.5mm f0.95 Voigländer Nockton which although a manual lens seems to perform very well and might allow me to do some decent portraits as well. The only thing holding me back at this point is the flash sync issues. I still have to wrap my head around this part. I mean i already have Nikon compatible Pocket Wizards along with Power MC2 antennas to sync my Einstein heads and i wonder what i would have to use to get my SB900s and Einsteins to work with the Olympus.

But like i said thanks for the great demonstration of the EP-5's capabilities.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the comment, there are many other M4/3 systems out there now, just have to take your time and do your research. One thing I know the EP5 has not worked for me is shooting sport , I mean team photos are fine but not for shooting action sport for me so far, I was trying to shoot my son's basketball game and I can't quite nail the shots I wanted. I can use burst mode and take a sequence of shots to pick one or two but that's not what I like to do.

I also have thought about your flash sync issues and similar like you, I have Canon 600EX speedlights and I haven't figured out if it is possible to use them with the EP5 and in ETTL mode. I did however tried to use Elinchrom with it and it works fine.

The main thing for me to have this camera is of it's size and how this system allows me to carry the system to many places that I wouldn't do with my DSLR system. Like last night, I was invited for a Fashion party and I was able to carry the EP5 with a few chosen lens in a small Camrac Rally 2 bag into the venue. I ended up using the 17mm f1.8 (which equals to 35mm FF) around the venue shooting people/models and I find that 35mm (FF term) range works very well in that scenario. I did not use flash (actually I have not used flash on the EP5 since the day I have it), the set the camera with the highest limit of ISO to 16000 and set the camera on auto ISO and I shoot in "A" mode. The images can be noise if the camera choose to shoot in ISO16000 but I am ok with that since this is not serious work and I don't really mind and I don't have to carry a flash with me (I don't have an Olympus flash at this stage).

Happy hunting and I hope you find your smaller system that will enable to take it everywhere, it really is a lot of fun and I've been shooting everything from the past 2-3 weeks. I did a wedding yesterday and I even used it on a few shots (just to test it out)

Love the first and last shot.
Beautiful model. Gorgeous hair.
Was it natural wind or a fan was used?

Thanks for the reply David, agreed about the sport shooting bit, i wouldn't try serious sports with a M4/3 right now, although i suspect it will be possible in the future the way technology is so quickly evolving, but like i said for the team shots it would be a nice addition to my actual rig. The shots are printed on site in 6x9 in format so it would certainly do the job quite well. I miss so much having a camera with me all the time, way back in the day i always had my Nikon F3 with me, often times i removed the motor grip to make it lighter, but even with the grip it was still a manageable weight and size. But the D3s especially with the 24-70mm on it is just too cumbersome.

I can see very well doing shots with this format at weddings too. If the fridge hadn't broken down (went to buy a new one today) i could have bought an EP-5, grrrrr. It'll have to wait. i also read and watched tutorial/reviews about the new Sony A7 and A7r and they seem quite nice too though a little bigger but still tiny compared to my DSLR. :-)

Did you manage to sync your Elinchrom wirelessly or just using a sync cord ?

Yes the Sony looks nice too but oh well I have invested in a few Oly lens now. Just have to wait for a new Oly body maybe EP6? Ideally, I would like it to be around the 20Megapixels mark.

I synced the ELinchrom using Elinchrom Skyport trigger (wirelessly).

It was natural wind (being in the open), it was a windy day really so at time become problematic for us
