Hi all - Wondering if any of you have been to this area in eastern Nebraska? I have the opportunity to check it out this weekend, and I must admit I don't know much about it. Are there specific areas that might be better to catch some birds or other wildlife? This time I will have others in the vehicle with me, and was hoping for a shortcut or two until I have more time. I know it's probably early for some fall migrants. Thanks!

I've been to DeSoto many times over the years but not yet this fall. It is a bit early for waterfowl migration but I would not be surprised to see some pelicans, a few geese, ducks and maybe an eagle or two this weekend. Years ago it used to get visited by hundreds of thousand snow geese each fall but they seem to bypass it now in favor of Squaw Creek NWR near Mound City, MO.

Each fall they close many of the roads in DeSoto; I assume so as to minimize disturbing the birds however I've never understood the logic as vehicles don't seem to create a problem as Squaw Creek and places like Bosque del Apache.

Any way, FWIW, I much prefer Squaw Creek because of the greater number of birds, better access, and fewer people.

BTW, DeSoto was hit pretty hard by the floods of 2011. I think they just reopened the visitor center.

I believe they just closed the road to the good parts a week or so ago. This is what I don't like about this NWR. When the getting is good they shut off the road. Don't waste your time.

I've heard similar poor reviews about this NWR. I photographer friend of mine who lives very near this refuge doesn't even bother and heads down to Squaw Creek.

Well, crap! This is disappointing to learn. I will definitely be checking out Squaw Creek, but my travels are taking me north this time so it will have to wait for another time. Thank you so much guys, for the info and heads up.
