I happened to notice the evening light streaming into the courtyard and by chance it was shining on Mr. Lincoln, a gorgeous red rose with an aroma to match its beauty. I grabbed my camera that had my 24-105mm lens on and walked outside. Instantly my attention was diverted by the cries of the sandhill cranes that had been migrating all day as they headed for Bosque del Apache NWR.

While I strained my eyes trying to spot them, I happened to notice a movement in one of our peach trees. The sunlight was almost dancing upon this Eurasian dove, as it sat upon a gnarly stump of an old limb. I carefully walked to the courtyard wall and with sheer luck had still not frightened this bird that not many people appreciate in North America. I took my shots and left, noticing that it was still sitting there in that magical light, which was about to disappear behind the Magdalena mountains. It is amazing how something so simple as a dove can give a person a good dose of goosebumps. That did make my day!

Hi Geoff,
I guess the lens worked and that is all that counts. I am now waiting on the 100-400mmL that I just bought. By the way, thanks for that comment. I want you to know that in 1966, when I was driving to Anchorage, Alaska to begin my teaching job there, I literally stopped my truck and got out to kiss the black top that I was driving on when I got to Whitehorse. I had never been on a 1,000 +mile gravel road before in my life and the welcomed sight of the 10 mile stretch to and from Whitehorse was all I needed for me to react!

Thanks, Eric. For me it is called a "stroke of luck" and I'll take it. With my new lens coming you don't know how much I am looking forward to driving down to Bosque del Apache. It is only 10 miles away from our home. The cranes are coming down now.
