p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Fall in the Smokies

My one chance to get out and shoot some fall color was last weekend. Unfortunately The Great Smoky Mountain National Park was still closed. I got there plenty early, and was glad I did. By 11Am every turnout that was still open was crowded. I still got a few shots that I was happy with, thought I would share them. Thanks for looking, any comments or crits are welcomed and appreciated.

#2:A previously never seen feature...probably underwater most of the time.

#3:Cascades on Walter Camp Prong

#4:Fall colors in golden light just after sunrise.

Very nice Travis. And thanks for the condition reports over on Google+. Still haven't made it up there. Next week is my only chance and I'm not sure I can leave work at this point. Probably a zillion people up there.

I am sure it is packed now, since TN and NC decided to open the park on their own dime, and then Washington got back to work. While I would love to be there tomorrow, I am sure I would also hate it.

Nice shots. I like 3 and 4

What lens are you using in #1? That is a massive sunstar. I havent been able to get anything even a quarter of that size when shooting into the sun at f22

#1 was shot with the 17-40L on the 7D. That lens seems very keen to exaggerate flare, you should have seen all teh junk it had on the right side of the base exposure for the sunstar.

The image itself is a 3 shot blend using Jim Fox's thumb in the frame trick. One shot is the big flare shot, the next is the same exposure but with the thumb covering the sun, then a dark one to get the sky and the top of the sunstar. It has not been increased in size for effect.

Travis - I actually was talking with you on Ian's post about the Federal closures. And if I go, I definitely will get off road or at least pretty far down some of the FRs. Hopefully that will get me away from the crowds.

Very cool shots here. You definitely made the most of your opportunity. #1 is really sweet, and I am glad the finger trick worked for you on that one. I like the mood and atmosphere in #2 and 3 both. Such great creek/stream shots.

Thanks for the kind words Jim. I have tried that dinner trick a few times and it never seems to work for me so I was happy when it worked this time.
