I recently got a Canon 70-300L, and am noticing some unusual behavior in OOF areas that I've never seen with my other lenses, including the 300 f/4L it replaced. It seems, especially in high contrast areas (leaves against sky for example) that there is a second, fainter image. I've noticed this both with and without filters. The last time it happened I was shooting through a window, and I'm not sure if that's usually the case. Is there anything that can be done to avoid this? I'm mostly wondering if this is a property of the lens, or something to do with my technique.

Here is an example image: http://adamdeglmann.com/temp/IMG_3337.JPG

Shooting through glass will give unpredictable results.

What was your shutter speed on this shot? Looks like the leaves were moving in the wind a bit?
How big of a crop are you showing here?

If you have an L lens don't use an XYZ filter on it, quality glass in front of quality glass if you even need a filter.

The bird shows no signs of 'doubling'? How close were the leaves and branch to you?

You also didn't mention if the window was single, double or triple paned

Thanks for the response. The windows hadn't occurred to me until I was writing this post, hopefully that's the culprit. The example shot is approximately a 2/3 crop. 1/500s at f/5.6. I would think it was motion blur except that it's identical in a string of shots. When using a filter, it was a multi-coated B+W, but it didn't make any noticeable difference.

Thank you for posting my photo to the thread. It's a double pane window, and this particular shot was at an angle to the glass. I'll try a test shot without the window and see what I get.

Just tried another shot with the window open and it seems fine. This is my usual bird watching window when I'm working from home, so it's odd I never had this issue with other lenses. I'm glad to see it's not just a property of my new lens though. Thanks everybody!
