p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Dolomites Valley after Storm (composition question)

Val di Funes Church, in the Puez Odle mountains of northern Italy, is a special little find. There was a heavy storm the day earlier which was still clearing when I visited. The low clouds you see are from that. Some light rain made everything wet and my pants got soaked with water as I walked through the wet grasses and meadow. I took too many photos and have a difficult time figuring out which composition is best (if any). I hope you can help me with any comment and suggestions. Thanks everyone.

#2 San Giovanni Church and Forest -- by walking around, I could compose this church on either the right or left side of my frame. I'm not sure which I like best.

#1 works best I think. I would have tried getting closer at the same angle to the church and then shot wide to see what that looked like, but who knows if that would turn out.

I agree with #1 being the best. The church acting counterpoint to the mountain peaking out makes use of most of the frame. #2 leaves the right side of the frame feeling a little unused. #3 would be better if there was something leading to the center of the frame. Having the building in the middle without leading elements make the rest of the frame feel unused. #4 would be better if the foreground fit the vertical composition better. I think it would work better horizontally, but the foreground needs some more visual masses in it, like a rock/backpacker/river etc.

Hey Gordon,

You did get a lot of cool shots from that place. #1 and 3 are my favorites.

The composition looks balanced with the church on the right and the mountains on the left.
Lovely shot!

I am going to disagree with everyone here. I like 2 and 4. For me, I think 2 wins out over #1 because the foreground leads your eye into the church whereas in picture 1 the church is just sort of there. Great shots though.

I think #1 is just slightly better than #2. I like the composition of #4 a lot, but that side of the church itself looks quite bland; I think that keeps it from being the best of the lot.

I'd go with 2, I like the curves leading your eye to the church.
