Has anyone been up to shoot the Elk in Pa. yet this year? I am planning on going next week and was wondering what the rut looked like so far? Also looking for any suggestions on good spots to shoot. I went up for a day last year for my first time way after the rut just to look around and did see a few elk.

Two nice shots Stuart. A great place for shooting elk is up in Jasper. No idea about PA though.

The first is good and the second a beauty Stuart. I did not know there are elk in PA

There is an Elk Scenic Drive in north-central PA near Moshannon State Forest in Clearfield and Elk Counties.

I have a brochure I picked up years ago that shows the drive and 8 recommended viewing spots. I'm not sure if this brochure is available on-line.

I've never been there but would like to backpack the Quehanna Trail sometime soon. I hear it's beautiful country.

Hey Stuart,

This time of the year can be pretty busy up there. Even though everyone will be in Benezette I still recomend starting there the crowds will point you towards the elk, stop by the visitor center for more info.

There is a resident cow/calf herd at Benezette of about 100 or so and they will attract some big bulls this time of year.

The rut is about over. The number of extremely large bulls has dwindled considerably--still some nice bulls there, but did not see any 400+ bulls this year. The "hunt" is unmanaged and is taking the top bulls each year--absolutely no thinking or fore sight on the part of Pa Game Commission.

Dewey Road on Winslow Hill and then a walk back to the "saddle" usually pays off.
