As the summer heat begins to lessen, and the angle of the sun keeps low in the sky, mornings and late afternoons in the Mesquite Dunes are wonderful times to roam.

Very nice Charlie. Those lines in the sand are gorgeous

The dunes don't change color in the fall? XD

Thanks, Killer.
Actually, any time of year in Death Valley is good- unless you include the long summer.
Being in the hottest place on earth at the hottest time of the year is seriously dangerous- as in make a simple mistake in thinking and preparation and it might kill you.
120+ Fahrenheit in the shade is no joke (it's probably way more that 150 in the sun- and in the sun is where you are when you go hiking).
Yes, Killer, I missed the autumn color change of the dunes; I was a week too early .

Thanks Luke, Scott, John, Nick, Kee and Kenny.
As long as the sun is shining (you need shadows to show texture), and it's low in the sky, and you avoid shooting footprints in the sand- there are myriad opportunities for photographic success in these dunes (plus, it's a really a swell place to be ).
For me, the biggest problem is avoiding the footsie prints.

Nice shot Charlie!!!

Sky could use a touch of noise reduction IMO.

Good work, Charlie. Must be fun with a camera on the dunes.

Charlie,

Nice depth of field, in a shot where it really matters. Was this shot just with small aperture and hyper focal distance setting? No tilt sift for example?

Thanks AMaji, Mark, Wayne and JS.
You're right, Mark. It's a slide scan, and I sometimes don't catch the "noise," especially in the sky.
No special lens- just a 24mm (film), turned vertically, aimed down as much as possible, and using hyperfocal to maximize dof. Probably had the aperture one or two stops bigger than the smallest possible. My guess is f11.
