Hi!

I rarely ever shoot portraits especially flash portraiture. Yet I want to look into it more deeply and got myself two off camera flashes, lightstands, etc. These images were taken using those two off camera flashes outdoors at a local park. C&C welcome!

Thanks for looking! Chewbacca123

I like the poses and venue.

Looks like some really nice natural light - I would have ditched the flash (would have eliminated some of those hot spots and shadows).

On (7) looks like you caught her mid-blink in one eye

I respectfully disagree with Greg on this one. I think the flashes really gave the images their pop. You're shooting in the shade and the sky is in the background, hot spots. You need the flash to give the face its pop, to compete with the background.

One thing that I really like about this is that the light looks good. The second light is very subtle. If you're just learning to use OCF, wow! You did an amazing job!

A few nits. I would clone out the long grass stems from under the bench in 3, 4, 5, and 6.

My faves are 1, 4/5, and 7. Great job!

The use of flash is fine- but I would have considered softening the light with some type of diffusion... Nice shots. What lens?

First off, an attractive model always helps. I think these are very nice. The use of flash works for me here and the use or not of any modifiers is a personal choice IMO. Daylight is often hard light, and flash doesn't always have to be softened to look right. Anyway the lighting doesn't look too harsh to me as is. Good job! One pick for me is her expression is similar throughout.

Thank you very much for you feedback! We have tried out the flashes indoors once before and took a couple shots. I don't have enough space though. So this was my overall second usage of flashes ever and my first time outdoors. I felt kind of awkward showing up with all sorts of equipment like this but I guess I did it and git out of my comfort zone - wasn't that bad after all
I used two Yongnuo 560 III flashlights on lightstands and two white umbrellas in order to soften the light a little bit. I decided to go cheap on my strobe equipment and find out if I like this sort of photography enough to do it more often - so far I do.
The natural light wasn't too bad that afternoon, due to the clouds. However it was quite dark, I would've had to push the ISO a lot. But of course available light wasn't an option anyways since I wanted to try out my flashes
While shooting I felt #4,5,6 turned out well. I redid #4 because of the scarf hanging off the bench. However I like the expression of the model more in #4 than in #5. #6 is obviously just a little different. #1-3 were done in search for some poses. As I mentioned I never shoot portraits but really want to. This is my biggest problem I feel. I have a hard time coming up with poses - since I have little experience.
Towards the end of the shooting we got a little more experimental and tried the pose in #7. I didnt think it would turn out that well. I had a really hard time placing the flashes since the bench itself and myself would always interfere with the light.
Oh and @24Peter: I used a Tamron 24-70. I wanted to change to my 50 1.8 G but time flew by and I didnt get to do so anymore. But I will have more chances soon.

So if you have any more advice please let me know! And thanks for watching!

Great first attempt. Outdoors I use three lights: two strobes and the sun. I think it works well if you have a primary light at full power in front of the subject for the catch lights int he eyes. A secondary at less power can be placed higher with a 30-45 degree down angle to act like a hair light but catching one of the sides of the face. If the sun is positioned on the other side, you have a perfect combination.

I thought the flashes were a little strong, maybe too close to the subject. Did you shoot in manual mode?

I will try out different distances of the flash next time. I did but I might want to try even more. And yes I shot in manual mode. The camera would have chosen wrong exposures otherwise.

Beautiful model and nice captures. My only nit is on photo #2 where the lighting is rather unfortunate in the crotch area.

#7 is my fav. Did you use a grid or just vignette in post production on that one?

Cute model too

Isn't that what you want? Close to the subject wraps around the subject more (softer). Perhaps just lower the power if you think it is too bright.

Thank you very much for your responses! They were really encouraging and every criticism is very worthy for me as a beginner!!! We shot some more portraits yesterday and wanted to make them some simple AUTUMN Portraits. This is the link to the new Thread:

Great job for your first time using OCF. All of these look very nice. Can't wait to see what you do with some more practice.
