For many years, Joshua Tree National Monument was known to few- even though it was only 100 miles from L.A.
Then rock climbers discovered it, as did the new world of digital photography.
And it became a national park.
A winter weekday is probably the best time to go nowadays to miss the crowds, and the weather is still good then- getting cold only at night.
Between the wonderful rock formations and the desert plants at that elevation (+- 5,000 feet), it's a great place to camp for a few days.
